You may not have to take your laptop out of your luggage anymore when you're going through security at the airport. A new CT scanner is going to roll out to TSA security lines in the US this summer, reports Bloomberg Government. The days of needing specialized travel bags with fold-out laptop sections to get through security may be coming to a close. In a press call last week, TSA Administrator David Pekoske announced that the agency had signed a contract to get 300 CT scanning machines. The CT scanners can provide TSA agents with a three-dimensional view of luggage contents, and will detect some items automatically in the future. www.techradar.com/news/airport-security-may-soon-let-you-leave-your-laptop-in-your-bag

Over the last decades, airport security has become so strict that it's taking the fun out of traveling. But while it's understandable due to a few terrorists, it's also about time someone invented ways to ease up on the checks.

Air travel is very safe. What we cannot safeguard against are mentally unstable pilots, like the German and possibly also the Malaysian, when they crash their airplanes deliberately and take hundreds of passengers withe them to a certain death.

Why must your laptop be scanned separately at an airport security check? In theory, a laptop might contain a bomb or hide a weapon. Therefoore, all laptops must be taken out of carry-on bags and passed through scanners on their own. The rule allows screeners to get an unimpeded look at each computer, which might help them discern whether it contains hidden explosives. And removing a laptop also makes it easier for screeners to see whatever else is in the bag. Computers can be large and dense enough to conceal parts of a suitcase in an X-ray image. (A knife, for example, might slip through a scanner if it were tucked underneath a heavy laptop.) The x-ray machine doesn’t harm the laptop, nor does it “erase” any digital memory cards.

You can speed up your trip through airport security with a checkpoint-friendly laptop bag, which allows you to keep your laptop in the bag as it goes through security.

The next generation will probably replace laptops with smaller devices, which are easier to check through airport security.
Problem solved.

Better checked than banned in hand baggage.

Within a couple of years, travellers could simply walk through a short corridor, with coats on; and car keys and phones in pockets, being screened by ultra-low temperature sensors.

It has taken some of the fun out of traveling ⚓️anchor, So I leave my laptop at home and just use my phone. It's not as handy but better than worring about your laptop all the time.

That includes us the crew and every single person that ever worked on the plane. Gets kind of scary.

Saw the police select a guy for a closer inspection at an airport seemingly just because of his looks. Nobody else was stopped.

All measures that make it easier for people to travel should be welcome, but they have to be secure.

Not having to empty out your luggage and then repack it while juggling your belt and shoes is a big improvement.

Good news: With staff having more training on the new machines, a shorter security line is likely as time goes on.
