Heathrow Airport (London, UK) has announced the rollout of new computed tomography (CT) security equipment throughout the airport over the next few years. When fully deployed, the 3D equipment is expected to end the need for passengers to remove their liquids and laptops from cabin baggage when passing through security.

Researchers at Durham University have developed a system that aims to screen liquids and large technology such as laptops, without it being removed from luggage, using machine learning algorithms.
The system could mean that people would no longer need to remove liquids from their bags during screening.
It uses artificial intelligence (AI), which would learn what a typical electronic item looks like when it goes through a scanner and flags up anything that looks unusual, such as materials it does not recognise, according to BBC reports.

Passengers at London’s Heathrow Airport may be able to keep their liquids inside their carry-on bags as they pass through security in as soon as three years. The airport is investing over £50 million ($63 million) in new scanners that can see inside passengers’ luggage in greater detail than they can currently. Present scanners only use X-ray technology, but these new scanners use the technology CT (computer tomography) scanners use in hospitals in order to see bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues inside the body. The technology will hopefully optimize security queues and help the environment by cutting down the number of plastics passengers use to store their liquids. This is part of Heathrow’s long-term sustainability plan, as it plans to open a third runway in 2026, which will greatly increase airport traffic.

The technology for 'walk-through security scanning' developed by Cardiff University is derived from astronomy detection. It uses infra-red cameras that are so sensitive they could “see” a 100-watt lightbulb from half-a-million miles away.

Facial recognition will solve many problems once it's fully up and running.

There are still some items you cannot bring through the airport security. To the ever-growing list of deadly weapons, creatively concealed narcotics and poisonous creatures routinely found in people’s luggage and publicized by the Transportation Security Administration online, add something new: A missile launcher. The T.S.A. said it found the weapon in a man’s checked luggage at Baltimore-Washington International Airport around 5:45 a.m. Monday. The man, whom the T.S.A. did not name, told the authorities that he was an active member of the military and wanted take the missile launcher home with him to Jacksonville, Tex., as a souvenir from Kuwait. How he even got it to B.W.I. is not clear (as is how he acquired such unusual taste in memorabilia).

Unlike most people, Miley Cyrus doesn’t mind a good airport pat-down. In fact, the singer said Tuesday on the U.K. radio show “Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp” that she welcomes it. One of the radio hosts mentioned that the singer had an affinity for wearing a lot of jewelry and said that airport security must hate her for it. “They have a love-hate,” the “Black Mirror” actress said. “They hate because it’s definitely kind of annoying that I never take it off, but they love me because they always get to do the pat-down.”

China is to start fingerprinting foreigners who arrive in the country. The Ministry of Public Security announced that it would begin screening foreign passport holders who arrive Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport in the Guangdon Province later this week. It will be rolled it out across the rest of the country by the end of the year. All foreigners aged between 14 and 70 will be required to leave their fingerprints when entering China, apart from people with diplomatic ranks. www.independent.co.uk/

Getting through airport security can be pretty stressful at the best of times, but wearing the right clothing can really make the whole process a lot easier. Here are some things you shouldn't wear to the airport. First, it’s best to avoid wearing a belt. Not only is it a pain for you to unbuckle and put it through the scanner, but it’s even more annoying trying to put it back on once you’re through. If you are a business traveller and require a belt with your suit, keep it in your carry-on until you are through security. Next, while the right jewelry can make a great outfit, it isn’t always the easiest thing to take off as you go through security. That’s especially true if it has finicky clasps. It’s best to stick to the basics, like a watch and a wedding ring. If you still want to bring jewelry to wear once you arrive at your destination, keep it in a separate bag inside your carry-on so that it is easily accessible for security. Also, don’t wear heels or sandals with more than one buckle. Keep it simple with comfortable flats that slip on and off. Don’t wear your heels! Even if you think they are comfortable, they most likely won’t feel that way by the time you get through security and to your gate. Speaking of comfortable shoes, you may want to think again if you are planning on wearing gel inserts in your shoes. Gel shoe inserts are not permitted through security or even in your carry-on luggage, so if you can’t live without the comfort of your insoles in destination, pack them in your checked bag. Next, if you are wearing layers, you should really start removing them before you get to the X-ray machine. You really don’t want to be wearing anything you have to remove by pulling over your head, like a pullover sweater or sweatshirt. Stick to a zip-up style sweatshirt or cardigan so that you don’t have to struggle to take it off or mess your hair up in the process. Above all, be patient and polite. Being at the airport can be a stressful time for everyone, including security personnel and airline employees. From globalnews.ca/

According to Indian News, 84 Indian airports will replace existing door frame metal detectors and hand-held scanners besides pat-down searches of passengers to detect metallic objects by March 2020.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told express.co.uk that thanks to 3D cabin baggage technology, it will soon not be necessary to take liquids in 100ml bottles out at security, an irritating precaution for rushed travellers.

I discussed this thread with Mrs G last night and we agreed that if will be a great relief when we finally are able to just walk through a scanner without the need to separate liquids, laptops, belts, jackets and shoes.
