Since too many people end up with financial problems, it must be allowed to question how parents advice their children in such matters. Therefore, I dare raise the question if our schools should take on that role. They educate pupils in other important matters, but their lives can be ruined if they don't learn how to balance a budget and not spend more money than they earn.

It would probably be a good idea.. so many of the skills needed to just manage a household are no longer taught.

I agree a very good idea but one thing I have noticed is young kids now want what there parents have. They don't want a starter home they want what there parents have. They don't know their parents worked all their lives started in a small house and older cars and built what they had. Some kids get that some kids don't. Not sure how you would teach that.
But for sure the schools could teach you to be financially responsible.

I think each generation is different so classes would have to keep being changed.
So much of it is just common sense. How do you teach that?
But you can teach if you have a $100 coming in you can't spend $150. Maybe the government should take the class. The difference is they are spending our money and not their own. But that's a whole different thread...lol.
Some kids grow up entitled. They get what ever they want just because they want it. That wasn't how I grew up. So parents have a lot of control how their kids grow up. Not all the control for sure but a lot.

The teachers give the pupils so many abstract math exercises. Why not relate the problems to everyday life and realistic situations that they may actually encounter?

I totally agree...it would be so much more useful to teach things they will encounter in their everyday lives. I know I could've benefitted from a few courses like that.

No never have @justbec,
But I did have a class where everyone picked 5 or 10 stocks and we followed them daily. It's been so long ago I'm not sure what the class was but later I did this on my own just to see how I would do. Did pretty good.

I have sometimes used X and Y for calculations. I had advanced math in college, but almost never used it for my jobs later. By now, I have forgotten most of the formulae, so if I need them, I have to enrol in a refresh course. LOL

Maybe the government should take the class. This also affects politicians and business people. Many bankruptcies could have been avoided if the owners and directors/CFO of companies had been better trained in basic calculations. But as with everything else, I guess that greed overshadows common sense.

Unfortunately, some bankruptcies are calculated by cynical individuals to gain money on others' misfortune. Such people need a course in morality and improved behaviour more than any math skills.

History lessons about ancient cultures can be interesting enough, but they don't help you balance a family budget.

There are too many kids that make it all the way to adulthood without having a clue about finnce.
The goal for all schools should therefore be to teach our children the basic fundamentals of financial literacy, from managing a simple checking account to buying a car or a home to even dealing with personal taxes.

I think personally schools are not focused at all on life but just learning. Budgeting, housekeeping in a hygiene sense, healthy cooking would almost cover life. Living within your means, being clean and healthy is paramount. I love ancient history and science but wasting time here hasn't helped me from the moment I left school. Don't get me wrong it's great to know about those things but schools need to focus on things you encounter in day to day living not the Roman Empire or the Solar System. We can choose to learn those things later. Why spend money on outer space travel before we fix our inner space problems. I'm saying that basically the subjects are not prioritised properly because most of us will not become scientists or historians but just be people who will work in retail. As Joey, said when generations progress the subjects need to, so adding not necessarily computer studies but marketing in technology giving many who will never be employed the ammunition to start their own business and become independent.
