Pets can be very mischievous when you aren't looking. Much like little kids can be. So if you have one tell us about it.
I'll start it out tell you about our first experience with Niki. We had left the house for a couple hour and came home. This was back in 1970. We had a hard time getting in the door. While we were gone Niki took her bag of dog food to the front door and destroyed the bag. So here was food and pieces of bag mostly by the front door but also the living room. Back in the '70's a lot of TV's had legs. On top go the TV were two ceramic heads my wife had made. The were on the floor under the TV she turned over right on top of the heads. Surprisingly nothing was broke. It was a huge mess to clean up but that was all. No real damage. She was still a puppy but she knew she did something wrong and didn't want to make eye contact till it was cleaned up. Oh the fun of having a puppy. But this is just my first story.

When Lys and I lived in Italy, we had a dog named Aurea for a short while. Lys and her son had found her in the canal, where somebody had wrapped her in a plastic bag and thrown her in the water. She was very intelligent and obeyed commands in four languages. She was also devious enough to leave a few drops of pee here and there rather than dumping her load in one spot. When we went on our honeymoon to Venize, we left enough food and water for Aurea to last for three days + set up a sandbox for her on the veranda to do her personal business. But when we returned, we spotted the usual small puddles. When she had a litter of five puppies, the management of the appartment building ordered us to get rid of the little canine family, so we placed them at an uncle's farm nearby. After a few weeks, they were all gone and the uncle, who didn't live there himself, was of the opinion that they were either taken by fox or people that wanted to keep them as pets. I've never met a more clever dog than Aurea.

Niki was also a smart dog and really like everyone. On Saturday or Sunday I would let her out in the fenced backyard and go and read the paper. Niki was a Malamute so she didn't bark, it was more like a cry. As soon as I would here her I'd go let her in. Never seem like anything was amiss and we did this for several years. Much later I was talking to an elderly couple and they finely told me was was going on. I'd let Niki out, she would do her business then climb the fence and go visit the couple as they sat outside drinking their coffee. They really loved her and had treats for her. If you know how dog love treats and attention is easy to see why she climbed the fence. Then she would climb the fence again and come to the back door and cry to be let in. I got a laugh out of it and figured a way to keep her from doing it. I was always worried she would get hit by a car. But I would still walk her over to see the couple a few times a week if I saw them out.

I'll trawl my old albums later and see if I can find some photos of Aurea and her offspring.

Unfortunately, today didn't have enough hours for that. I have more or less been continuously active sine 8 am, so I have written it on my agenda for tomorrow afternoon.

My family had Aurea from 1994 to 1997. I have no idea which breeds she may have been a hybrid of, but I suspect that both chihuahuas, prague ratters/pinchers and fox terriers may have been parts of her pedigree. The same goes for the father of her litter of five puppies, although he must have been bigger and fluffier, as judged by the offspring. Like their mother, they were mostly black, with a few white spots here and there. I couldn't find good pictures of Aurea, but here is one of her newborn babies and me holding one of them.

Yes, just a pity that they were gone soon after. What you see in the pics is when we left them at the uncle's shed, about a week after they were born. When we came back some days later, they were all gone. I remember when we were driving home that day, Aurea was following us - running alongside the car at full speed on her little legs - for about a mile before she gave up and returned to her puppies, as if she begged us not to leave them there, but we had no choice, since nobody wanted them and at the time, we thought it best to let the mother stay with her babies. Anyway, we soon moved to Norway without possibility to bring a dog or six with us, so there was little else we could do. Sadly, the Brindisi area is full of stray dog groups, almost like wolf packs, lurking around the outskirts of the city and the sea port. If they become too many or start to threaten people, the police will kill them. As a consequence, the animal shelters are overcrowded and cannot receive more dogs. And we could't affort to keep them in a private kennel. But we sometimes mention Aurea and feel guilty of betraying her and the little ones...

As I mentioned we have a parrot and if Ricco wants we can climb off his cage. At the time we still had Sammy. So Ricco would climb off the cage and go toward Sammy sleeping on the couch. Sammy would spot her and jump off and run into the bathroom where we were taking showers. Then a little latter you would here another noise and it would be Ricco. So he climbed off his cage, walked around the couch, walked down the hall, turned and walked through the bedroom then down another hall to get to Sammy.
Sammy was smart to get out of Ricco's way. In a fight I think Ricco would hurt her badly.

It wasn't easy bringing a dog in to start with. Ricco had no clue of what a dog was and the first time he was around another pet. But some get along just fine.

For a while when we were working we kept Niki in the garage. One time I came home and she had eaten the trim of the door part way off. So I put 2 X 4's around the area and made a slot for a heavy board. She chewed it up a little but it was just scrap wood I had. Just before we sold the house Replaced the trim board. But she was really a sweet dog with people. Guess she had separation anxiety. But we had to both work to feed that small horse.

When I was the warehouse manager at Autover Bilglass, a car glass company, one of my co-workers had an amstaff puppy that he could't leave alone in his appartment, so he took it to work with him. The boss didn't want it near the offices or stores, so he kept it inside our spare delivery van in the basement. But the boss exploded when he discovered that the dog had chewed away large chunks of the steering wheel! Afer that, my colleague had to leave his four-legged friend with his sister-in-law, who was staying home with small children. They were thrilled to have uncle's doggy with them, but I doubt that their mother was equally happy. LOL
