My impression with Facebook is like driving in the fast lane. Few opportunities to stop and smell the flowers. The posts just roll down in a seemingly endless flow! Yes, exactly. There is no substance to them at all. And very easy to miss as they whizz past!

Likewise! I deleted my personal account many years ago. Now, I only have one under the name Tix Mascot, which I use to recruit members to this forum, but so far, no luck! Same thing here. I have a facebook for my place and I have a hundred something *likes* on it, seems to be more each day. But only one person from there came to the forum to check it out! And I have no idea who they are that are liking it! lol.

The problem with social media is that even though you participate under your real name (which I normally don't do anymore, btw), you feel more free to express things that you would never have said in real life. This surreal arena brings out more extreme opinions in the participants and makes them give the damn about reactions and consequences, at least to a certain degree. Personally, I would have objected if I encountered such racism as described above, then deleted the "friends" in question if they didn't react as I had hoped. Some of the stuff people say on Facebook and just generally on the internet is quite sickening. And it's dishonest, created for the purpose of propaganda. I've seen videos put out by some that show all sorts of violence and then they say 'it's the refugees'. I know for a fact that some of those images have been around years. But who's going to say 'that is false and a lie?' And many who really haven't done their research will believe what they are shown, and that is the worrying thing.

In my opinion, many users of social sites know this very well, but they still keep on pretending that everything is kosher in Cyberland because it gives them a false sense of belonging that they unwillingly want to let go of, so they cling on to it for as long as they can, while continuing to howl with the wolves. [that was an awful lot of metaphors] LOL

I just read that the new Facebook trend is to have very few good, close friends. But it's still considered as socially awkward to delete friends once you have added them, no matter how peripheral they are and how little contact you have with them. My "company" account Tix Mascot has around 25 friends and that is for one purpose only: To promote the forum and get people curious enough to visit us.

I had people like that since I returned to Facebook in 2009. They would bully me and belittle me because my own beliefs, for being opinionated, and standing up to them where I blocked over 400 people since then.

Yes, that's some fine "friends". There was recently a case where a woman posted her winning Tim Hortons cup (roll up the rim to win) on her Facebook. One of her over 400 "friends" stole the number off the post and tried to collect the $100.00 prize. How many of these peoples "friends" will show up at their funerals eh?

I'm only there briefly every Sunday under the name Tix Mascot to try to recruit more people to this forum. The rest is of no interest to me...

I enjoy seeing photos of family and being reminded of birthdays etc. I don't really have a problem with FB.
