Statistics catch up with us everywhere. I guess things that are true in real life become even truer online.

Oh yeah, Facebook friends. Only a few are someone I could have conversations with in real life. I'm amazed when I see people with 100's of them.

it's the same as on forums. be careful who you call your "friends" as some are any thing but friends!

I've met some lovely people on these forums must say.
Probably why I prefer them to Facebook. It's a different kind of media.

My impression with Facebook is like driving in the fast lane. Few opportunities to stop and smell the flowers. The posts just roll down in a seemingly endless flow!

Agreed geriatrix, I have a Facebook page for the forum but don't have one myself as when I do look on the odd occasion at others they are just full of trivial nonsense

Likewise! I deleted my personal account many years ago. Now, I only have one under the name Tix Mascot, which I use to recruit members to this forum, but so far, no luck!

The word 'Friend' covers a lot of territory; it can mean acquaintances, work associates, parents of children in a play group, former college mates, people one sees daily, people one has known for decades, but only send Christmas cards one a year; and people one is closer to than family and is rarely separated from their presence. So your Facebook friends are probably in one of those categories. However, since most of them are physically across the globe from you and really busy with their own lives, none of them are probably able to help you out if you have a flat or visit you in the hospital, much less go out with you for a drink on a Friday night. It's important to have all kinds of friends, though, so get out there in the real world and find some new friends you can make memories with and have fun experiences with.

yes wizard, i totally agree, you can't compare real life friends to internet ones, its shocking how the generation below me live a virtual life on line , nothing replaces the benefits of getting out there and living life off the computer.

I feel pretty dependent on the Internet myself, but I must say that I am sorry for those that live on it continuously. Personally, I don't carry it with me in my pocket, since my old cell phone only has talk and text functions. As for Facebook, I'm only there to recruit forum members and to relay info that my wife puts there. Although I have some 25 friends that I know already from real life, I rarely communicate with them and I sometimes contact them by phone instead. I accepted one invite from two people that I don't konw, but when they didn't reply when I invited them to check out this forum, I haven't bothered saying hello to them since.

Borderline off topic, I know, but still...
Your so-called "Facebook friends" may even turn out to be racists! I've seen people post bad things about refugees, like that they are Islamists and closet terrorsists that take advantage of the confusion in Syria to sneak into other countries along with the "real" asylum seekers! I become angry when I read such things, because suddenly, a person that I thought were a normal individual writes that "a dead refugee is a good refuge; one less succeds in entering my country"! Presumably kind people, who wrote about how they baked cakes to their children's sports club the night before, turn into monsters wanting other people dead!
And the so-called "friends" of my so-called "friends" give their posts smileys and thumbs up...
In a way, I can relate to their fear and frustration, but wouldn't it have been more honest to have written something like "I am scared shitless, I don't want my children to be exposed to cultural impulses that I don't know and understand, I want them to grow up in peace without the risk of becoming victims of terrorism"?

I know what you mean but people are entitled to express their views , you can't dictate to others how they should do so, that's for them to decide.

The problem with social media is that even though you participate under your real name (which I normally don't do anymore, btw), you feel more free to express things that you would never have said in real life. This surreal arena brings out more extreme opinions in the participants and makes them give the damn about reactions and consequences, at least to a certain degree.
Personally, I would have objected if I encountered such racism as described above, then deleted the "friends" in question if they didn't react as I had hoped.
