During excavation works, archaeologists often find some remains of musical instruments. Scientists suspect that between 60,000 BC and 30,000 BC, at the time when people began to create art (wall paintings, clay figurines), they also started to generate sounds consciously.
The human voice was probably the first musical instrument. In order to obtain a clear rhythm, people used their hands – they clapped or hit two stones with each other. The instruments most frequently found by archaeologists include various types of flutes, whistles and pipes made of wood or animal bones. The oldest findings of such kind in Europe come from the Upper Paleolithic period (50,000 – 10,000 BC). One of them is ‘tjurunga’ (rotating cube), which is about 25,000 years old. It is a piece of string attached to a timber, often in the shape of ellipse which, while turning around, emits a loud, roaring sound. Harp is a much more complex instrument also rooted in prehistory. Perhaps, arc was its prototype that inspired ancient man with the sound of twitched chord.
Fortunately, instruments from tens of thousands of years ago can still be found by indigenous peoples. Therefore, we know quite a lot about the music of primitive peoples, but have so far failed to determine exactly when and for what purpose it was originally created.

I hate it when they do that on me. LOL I'll try again before I replace them. Some become corrupted temporarily, while others expire after a while. Strange...

I just learned something new: There must be a space between an emoticon and the first letter of the text. If not, the emoticon shows up as an link reference rather than an image!

The harp seems to be a later version of the lyre...
The oldest surviving musical notation so far discovered, dates from c.1950 BC - this was a set of musical instructions to play the hymn, "Lipit-Ishtar" (King of Justice), found inscribed in Cuneiform on a clay tablet discovered at Sumer. Basically, this is no more than a quote of specific tuning intervals for lyre, followed by a tuning scale of the musical mode to be used in the Hymn.
Here is a rendition of the musical instructions for Lipit Ishtar, as arranged for solo lyre, by "Ensemble De Organographia" in their album from 2000, "Music of the Ancient Sumerians, Egyptians & Greeks":

The very first rhythmic beating of objects likely originated with monkeys and other primates, which have been observed making rhythmic noises and gestures with their voices and with objects to communicate. This finding has led scientists to speculate that there may be a common gestural origin for speech and music amongst all primates, including humans. The concept of drums are as old as mankind. A drum is called a membranophone, or an instrument that creates sound by striking a stretched membrane with some type of object, usually a rounded stick. Drums consist of a hollowed-out piece (called the body), a membrane stretched over the end of the drum and tuning keys or pegs which tighten or loosen the membrane to achieve different tones. While most may think that the body of the drum produces the sound, it is in fact actually the membrane and its vibration that creates the sound when struck. Drums first appeared as far back as 6000 BC. The first drummer cited by name in human history is Lipushiau, a woman from Ur in Mesopotamia, who was the head of Ekishnugal, Ur's most important temple. She is seen in reliefs with a round-framed drum, the balag-di. Mesopotamian excavations unearthed small cylindrical drums dated 3000 BC. Several wall markings found in caves in Peru show drums used in various aspects of societal life. The American Indians used gourd and wooden constructed drums for their rituals and ceremonies. Drums have always been used for more than merely creating music. Civil uses, messaging and religious uses are but a few. Drum kits, a grouping of various toned drums, originated in marching bands and parade bands in New Orleans. It was found that one drummer could play more than one drum simultaneously. This is known as double drumming. Cymbals and Tom Toms, which were invented in China, were added to drum kits. Percussion additives such as cowbells, wooden blocks, and chimes were incorporated as well. By the 1930s, the standard drum kit had taken shape. It consisted of a bass drum and foot pedal, snare, tom toms, hi-hat cymbal, and large hanging cymbals.
