There is an argument that cats sleep better than any other creature. And it is probably a valid one. Most healthy adult cats sleep away 50 percent of each day and some manage to sleep 70 percent of the day - which is almost 17 hours! Senior cats and kittens can sleep up to 80 percent. How do they accomplish this feat? First of all, cats have different body rhythms than humans. Cats are naturally nocturnal animals, but they don't stay up all night and sleep all day. They prefer many short periods of light sleep and a few periods of deeper sleep to the human period of one long sleep during a 24-hour period. During the periods of light sleep or 'cat naps', cats are pretty aware of what is going on around them. They can move from those light naps to instant action or into one of the deeper sleep modes. Okay, but do cats dream? Cats do enter the REM sleep phase, the period where humans dream. Most experts believe that cats also dream during this period. Many cat people have seen their cat 'sound asleep' and suddenly begin to twitch it tails, move its feet or sometimes even make aggressive noises. It sounds like a pretty wild dream!
