I hardly think that the Illuminati would leave an e-mail address on the Internet or donate huge amounts of money openly, so this story is somewhat unbelievable.
The Illuminati is possibly the most secretive of the secret societies, but what do we actually know about them?
After they broke away from the Freemasons, they have since become a prime focus for conspiracy theorists, many of whom credit Illuminati agendas for every conceivable disaster, mystery, and economic downturn. In point of fact, there is no evidence that the Illuminati still exist, but that only seems to add to their mystique.

The Illuminati were ultimately derived from the Persian Roshaniya.
They in turn spread to North Africa and Muslim Spain as the Maskali (from which mascara is derived!)
In Spain they spawned a group known as the Alumbrados.
They in turn spread out, interfaced with the Freemasons and Rosicrucians and in Bavaria were formed as the Illuminati.
Like most secret societies, the myths about them are far grander than the reality.
For a brief few years Weishaupt and his disciples influenced politics in Germany and France.
Then the order was suppressed and went underground.
Virtually nothing FACTUAL is known about their activities after their suppression.

Paranoia is widespread in certain environments, where some people think that everybody is out to get you, not only secret societies - whether they might be real or imaginary!

I came across an interesting article on www.bbc.com/, which claims that the Illuminati started as a secret society in Bavaria in 1776, allegedly as an alternative movement to Freemasonry, without mentioning that it was actually an offshoot of the latter, so maybe that part is a myth. We don't know much about the founders, other than that they were inellectuals that wanted a tool to limit the religious and elitist influence over daily life. However, they were eventually outlawed and suppressed by Christian and secular critics, whereupon they went underground and faded out of existence, at least officially.
