On Wednesday evening (May 1), a man plummeted into Hawaii's Kīlauea caldera — and survived. The man had climbed over a railing at the Steaming Bluff overlook to get closer to the edge of the cliff, which dropped down 300 feet (91 meters) into the caldera. At about 6:30 p.m. local time, he lost his footing and fell, according to a statement from the National Park Service. A search team found the man a couple of hours later "alive, but seriously injured," according to the statement. He had fallen onto a narrow ledge about 70 feet (21 m) down from the cliff's edge. Using ropes, a stretcher and a helicopter, the rescue team airlifted the man to Hilo Medical Center. [Photo: Fiery lava from Kilauea volcano erupts on Hawaii's Big Island]

Must not know what the railings are for. He was lucky...stupid but lucky.

People will always be willing to take chances to get the 'perfect' photo. Selfies kill dozens every year,

Yes, Joey12, that's a typical example of what I meant!

I just don't get it. I've crossed a fence before to get a better angle on a picture but I also had a big tree to grace against. Plus the ground was dry and that isn't always the case. If the ground would have been wet I would never have crossed the fence/railing.

It was bad enough before, when we only had traditional cameras, but the number of stupid accidents have skyrocketed after we got cell phone cameras with direct access to social media.

That is true. You rarely ever heard of accidents before cell phone cameras and selfies.

A hiker in Hong Kong fell almost 500 feet, ending his life, after apparently losing his balance taking a selfie on the famous Lion Rock mountain. The mountain has no railings on the edge of the cliff and the man moved too far out, falling off and catching a clump of grass to hang on. Another group of hikers tried to get to him, but the man couldn't hang on and fell. Authorities pronounced him perished at the scene.
