Corrrect me if I'm wrong, but aren't Billboard and similar lists a result of weekly sales (or downloads these days)?
One can manipulate the numbers by repeating purchases, so it's probably just a rough indication.
But you are right: The lists rarely overlap with people's individual preferences.

I'm always surprised when they get to the number one some and I've never heard of it. But it happens.

I became tired of the same songs on the radio, so I switched to playlists on Youtube.

I listen to a lot of 60's and 70's music. Most newest songs don't interest me much...a few do but not many.

I guess many people have their favourite tunes from the formative decades when they grew up and learned to appreciate music. After that, it just doesn't sound quite right anymore.
General thoughts, of course...

I like some music from the 1990's and 2000's but it's usually the artist I like. Not sure when it came out but in the last 10 or 15 years I think but I was having my car serviced and they gave me a car to drive. I went to a store and they didn't have a great selection of music but I had time to look around a little. I wanted something different to listen to for my hour drive home. Didn't see anything and started to walk out and I spotted a CD by Kenny G. I'm a huge Kenny G fan so I check to see if it was one I already had. Wasn't even close to anything I've ever heard. It was Kenny G playing Salsa music. I knew i had to buy that one. Not only was it different it was by one of my favorite artists. Ended up being great to listen too.

I like Kenny G, too. A relative gave me a couple of tapes more than 20 years ago and his sax had me hypnotised. LOL

My favorite song he plays is Songbird. I got to see him in concert and had great seats. The place was backed to standing room only. I think his music is timeless. It's just as good now as it was then and he is still at it.
I use to really be into photography and had my own studio set up. I took pictures of some models to build their portfolio and my own. One gal brought her own tape to play so I said sure and put in. The cassette was Duotones (Songbird is on it). I asked who did you say this is, she told me so I copied a little of it. The next day I went and bought the cassette, then latter the CD. But I liked it so well I bought several Duotone CD's and gave them to friends. I keep one in the SUV and one in the house. Songbird was the first song played in several of the cars and SUV's I've bought...Songbird is song 6 on Duotones so I skip right to it.
There are a couple artist I like now but I don't buy as much music like I use too. Plus I like Rock, Country, Classical, Jazz etc.
Ever hear of Keiko Matsui? Plays smooth Jazz and New Age music, another favorite.
OH and I can't forget Sade, I use to have everyone of her CD's but she may have released more since. Not sure of my favorite song of hers but the first one that comes to mind is Smooth Operator.

No, never heard about Keiko Matsui, but I'll keep looking for it.
Sade was a real 'pain' in a positive way for a while. You could hear Smooth Operator everywhere. LOL

I like horse music. This one will hardly show up on a Billboard list anytime soon, though...
