Reality television has become very popular over the past decade with shows such as "Survivor", "Big Brother" and "The Apprentice" attracting big audiences and making a lot of money for broadcasters worldwide. A definition of reality television is quite difficult but at its most basic it means programmes that show things really taking place, rather than drama or comedy that follows a script. Typically reality TV involves a group of people who are not trained actors being filmed in unusual situations over a period of time. Sport and news programmes are not considered reality TV.
Documentaries that explore aspects of society are a grey area, with some closer to news reporting and others blurring into reality TV because they set up situations which did not already exist. Recently celebrity versions of reality shows have made definition even harder, because they show the private lives of professional singers, actors, sportspeople, etc. as they cope with new situations. Reality TV is often a hot topic as proponents believe it paints an unrealistic and inappropriate portrait and is therefore bad for our society and the children that make up the majority of the audience. They call for a cut in the number of hours given over to reality programmes, or even to ban them completely. Opponents meanwhile maintain that people should be allowed to watch what they like, and that reality programmes make good TV, as shown by consistently high viewer figures.

It has some entertainment value, but I rarely watch it.

The word "reality" is misplaced in this setting, since most of what happens is scripted and closely doctored.

An easy way to stardom for aspiring individuals. But most of them are forgotten after a short while.

I guess the public is split down the middle. Some think it's fascinating and others think it's lame.

I hardly think that reality TV has added much valualble to an average TV viewer's life.

It seems as if with many other things, the future of the reality shows lie in streaming platforms rather than traditional TV. This trend has already started and Chris Abrego, co-CEO of Endemol North America, says that "those platforms are the networks of tomorrow and they need reality shows."

Who really cares?
I for sure am not interested in getting a bunch of publicity-craving youngsters' intimate details smeared all over my livingroom!

publicity-craving youngsters' intimate details Let me be a little more specific... TV can be used as an educational tool. There are some wonderful documentaries or science shows that impart a great deal of knowledge to viewers. There are also a proliferation of soap operas on the air with a huge following of fans. Sitcoms and drama series are also popular. With all that available, I am surpred that this whole new genre has been able to find a foothold in the competitive television industry. Compared to what I just referred to, reality TV is actually nothing but mindless fluff. There is no requirement by the viewer to think too hard or invest too much of themselves in the program. Unlike long running soap operas, there is a short lived time investment by the viewer with the promise of soap opera-like antics. At their best, reality shows give the average person an opportunity to win some money while taking advantage of their fifteen minutes of fame. Shows like The Biggest Loser try to teach contestants healthier lifestyles and may inspire viewers to do the same. What is the harm in that? There are many critics willing to tell you that reality television is contributing to "dumbing down" the participants. Well, Coronation Street has been on the air for years, but it doesn't appear to have taught viewers anything educational. So if reality TV is your cup of tea, sit back, relax and watch some people make complete fools out of themselves!

Let them expose themselves. Before the next season begins, they are just a pale memory, unless media keep reminding us that they still exist.

The only one I watch is Big Brother because they have competitions that are interesting. I always wonder how I would do in the competitions.

Probably very well, since the others' mind is focused on other things.

I don't know, I'm older than all those kids. But one other thing I like about it is there are no reruns. They show it once and that is it so if you might be gone that evening you better record it.
