This term refers to any action taken by a society to control access to ideas and information. Throughout history, many different types of societies, including democracies, have used censorship in various ways. The issue is increasingly important due to the rapid development of new communication technology. As innovators continue to create new ways for people to share information, many people are now arguing over the issue of censorship. For the proponents of censorship, restricting the access of information is something that can provide benefits to society. By censoring pornography on the Internet, children are less likely to encounter it. By censoring certain types of images and videos, society can prevent offensive or vulgar material from offending those that it targets. For example, some would argue that society should censor material that is insulting to a particular religion in order to maintain societal harmony. In this way, censorship is viewed as a way to protect society as a whole or certain segments of society from material that is seen as offensive or damaging. Some argue that censorship is necessary to preserve national security. Without using any kind of censorship, they argue that it is impossible to maintain the secrecy of information necessary for protecting the nation. For this purpose, censorship protects a state's military or security secrets from its enemies, who can use that information against the state. Those against censorship argue that the practice limits the freedoms of speech, the press and expression; and that these limitations are ultimately a detriment to society. By preventing free access to information, it is argued that society is fostering ignorance in its citizens. Through this ignorance, citizens are more easily controlled by special interest groups and groups that are able to take power are able to use censorship to maintain themselves. Additionally, they argue that censorship limits a society's ability to advance in its understanding of the world. Another main issue for the opponents of censorship is a history of censorship abuse. Those that argue against censorship can point to a number of examples of dictators that used censorship to create flattering, yet untrue images of themselves for the purpose of maintaining control over a society. They argue that people should control the government instead of the government controlling its people. (Source:

Internet censorship includes everything from well-meaning desires to protect children from unsuitable content to authoritarian attempts to control an entire nation's access to information. No matter what the censors' reasons are, the end result is the same: They block access to Web pages they identify as undesirable.
There are several software products on the consumer market that can limit or block access to specific Web sites. Most people know these programs as web filters, while their opponents call them censor ware.
Let's take a look at where the Net is systematically censored. In North Korea, only about 4% of the population has access to the Internet, but all websites are under government control. In Myanmar, the authorities filter e-mails and block access to sites of groups that expose human rights violations or disagree with the government. In Cuba, the Internet is available only at government controlled access points. Activity online is monitored through IP blocking, keyword filtering and browsing history checking. Only pro-government users may upload content.

One of my co-workers told me it's like that in China, too. The president is trying to stay in office for life and one of the things he is concerned about, is to censor the Internet in an attempt to curb the opposition.

In the beginning, the Internet was monitored by the Internet community rather than by governments or official organizations. The goal was to avoid government interference in order to promote freedom of speech and lack of prejudice. Though these initial sentiments were admirable in theory, governments and other bodies have been increasingly monitoring the Internet after concluding that self-monitoring was no longer adequate to solve emerging issues. Several examples of these issues included the increase of criminal activity on the Internet, the evolution of the Internet as a social phenomenon, the diversity of Internet users, and the advent of various political doctrines on the Internet. Therefore, Internet censorship exists to prevent individuals accessing copyrighted information, stop people from viewing harmful or sensitive content, promote particular religions and political ideas, control Internet-related and Internet-communicated crime; and monitor the billions of people on the Internet with varying opinions and preferences. Thus, Internet censorship acts as a viable method by governments and official organizations to manage what their citizens can view. There are several ways to overcome Internet Censorship. From using VPN to Tor browser, there are many ways to unblock websites. From www.iplocation.net/

From what I've heard, such means that reroute you through half the world to make an impression that you are accessing social media from another country than where you live and thus censored, are so slow that it's hardly worth all the hassle.

Now, it has happened again. In Ethiopia this time. After a rebellion in the Amhara province, the government blocked the use of the Internet. Also, the social media platforms Whatsapp and Telegram have been disabled for the same reason. This map shows more.

In Saudi Arabia, all internet traffic into the country passes through a router controlled and monitored by the Ministry of the Interior, a department of the Saudi Arabian government responsible for maintaining a list of previously blocked websites. Over half a million websites have been placed on the list since the Law of Printing and Publication was passed by royal decree in 2003, which made posting anything that could be seen as an attempt to stir up public discord punishable by 5 years’ imprisonment.

Back to Ethiopia. Although the country has opened up and become more transparent under the new regime, some basic things still remain.
What little access the people do have to the Internet has been closely monitored since the introduction of anti-terror legislation in 2009, which imposed huge restrictions against posting anything online that could be seen as critical of the government. In fact, two citizens have so far been convicted of online speech offences and handed down multi-year sentences.
So don't judge that book by its cover!

Let's take a look at how the Internet is actually censored. These are the most frequent methods:
DNS filtering – The authorities can block access through DNS hijacking, which returns the wrong IP address, or by not resolving the domain. Packet filtering – Another technique involves monitoring keywords and ending TCP packet transfers if certain words are detected.
IP address blocking – This involves blocking the connection to individual blacklisted IP addresses. It can also affect other websites hosted on the same server, even if they don’t include any inappropriate content. URL filtering – Certain pages can be filtered out if they contain sensitive terms in their URLs. Removing pages from search engine results – The authorities can pressure search engines to exclude specific websites from their results. This makes them essentially impossible to find unless a user already knows the URL. Resetting the network connection – When a connection is blocked by a filter, it can be cut off on both the client and server sides for a set amount of time. This can prevent other visitors from reaching the site, as well as stop the offending individual from accessing other websites. Disconnecting the network – Connections can be prevented in an even more comprehensive way by blocking access to routers. This can be done by turning off the hardware or through various software-based techniques. Disconnecting the network completely restricts internet access in the area and it is sometimes used by governments to shut down communication during political turmoil.
