They cured meat by drying it. They played music on instruments. They kept their homes clean and spent time hanging out on their flat rooftop terraces. They passed their homes on to their descendants. They went on camping getaways. They baked bread. They kept pets. Source: www.history.com

They drew pictures on the walls and we hang pictures on the calls.

I want to elaborate a little on this subject. According to American editorial director Benjamin Cohen, cavemen's dogs were moetly used for utilitarian purposes – helping with hunting, guarding the house and so on, with not much time for naps on their owner's lap. But recently, scientists have looked closer at the dental records of dog skeletons from up to 15000 years ago. What they discovered was that some of these dogs had been sick for a while before they died. And the only way for the dogs to have survived as long as they did after becoming ill was if they were getting nurturing aid from a human.

The main difference is that cavemen didn't have smart phones. Or maybe they did ... ?

I'd say they were more advanced than us if they didn't have phones of any kind.

Their means of communication were probably whistle sounds and drum signals.

Smoke signals
In ancient China, soldiers stationed along the Great Wall would alert each other of impending enemy attack by signaling from tower to tower. In this way, they were able to transmit a message as far away as 750 kilometres (470 mi) in just a few hours.
Misuse of the smoke signal is known to have contributed to the fall of the Western Zhou Dynasty in the 8th century BCE. King You of Zhou had a habit of fooling his warlords with false warning beacons in order to amuse Bao Si, his concubine who was known as one of four ancient beauties of China. When an actual rebellion occurred, no one came to the aid of the king.
Never cry wolf I guess.

I don't know how widespread the sense of unity was between local communities of cave people - if they had any need to communicate outside their own clan or family group.

I think that the earliest form of communcation must have been paintings and pictograms, probably as means of territorial markers as well as art.
Drums and smoke signals were not very practical, since both could attract unwanted attention from enemy tribes and predatory animals. These methods were also difficult to standardize into a meaningful "language".
