My family really needs: a bed for each child, private space for their toileting and bathing needs, enough space for us all to sit to dinner at once, a place to cook and store any food we need to eat healthfully, a place to greet visitors without being ashamed, and a place where we can recreate as a family/ play games/chat/lounge
We as a household need to put our dollars toward an investment so we have to look similar to the neighbourhood without spending more than 30% of our annual income on it or it's upkeep. We need it to be fashionable enough that if a buyer walked thru today, they wouldn't giggle or scoff. We need a nice enough place that a bank will continue our mortgage and the insurance money sees it as worth the insurance we must pay to have people even walk by the house, let alone visit. And tidy enough, the children's aid won't remove the kids for cause.
We actually want to earn enough to keep it over our heads without having to work 16 hour days or more. So we can actually see our house without our eyes half closed and our kids and spouse still know more about us than our name. And a picture left on the mantel gathering dust.
The rest is nothing but greed.

I wish you luck but never try and keep up with the Jones's. Happiness, able to pay the bills is much more important.
We have a small little house in a village, nothing flash but it is ours and we have everything we need. Our friends certainly have much bigger houses, have more money but that doesn't matter. People take you for what you are, not what you have.

toetapping, some people do anyway and there are others who like birds, need the shinies to feather their nests.

Some people are very superficial, though... My friend's uncle had a boat moored in a marina here in Oslo. the family was used to sailing and enjoyed moving around the fjord, while several of his neighbours never left the moorings, but used their boats as floating summer houses because they knew nothing about navigation. They needed the boats, however, to show their social network that they cold afford them! Weird or what?
