Of all the Germanic languages still in use, Icelandic is considered the most like the ancient languages it evolved from. This is why many native speakers can still read ancient texts written in Norse with little difficulty. Here are a few Norse verbs that have influenced English to such a degree that one could still understand them.  |

When the University of Iceland got its first computer in 1964, Icelandic did not have a word for computer. So the guardians of the language invented one: Tölva — a fusion of tala (number) and völva (prophetess) that adds up to the wonderfully poetic "prophetess of numbers".

When it comes to digital technology, Icelandic is among Europe's least-supported languages, according to a report by the Multilingual Europe Technology Alliance. Other tongues at the bottom of the digital heap include Irish Gaelic, Latvian, Maltese, and Lithuanian.

Although Icelandic has been the national language of Iceland throughout the country’s history, it only became the “official language” by virtue of Act No 61/2011, which was adopted by the country’s parliament in 2011.

A study by Europe's leading language technology experts published in 2012 rated Icelandic in grave danger of facing digital extinction because of a lack of technological support.
The study, prepared by more than 200 experts, assessed language technology support for each language in four different areas: automatic translation, speech interaction, text analysis and the availability of language resources.
Several languages, for example Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian and Maltese, received the lowest score in all four areas.

From reading the posts above, one may draw the wrong conclusion that Icelandic is about to become extinct soon. But that is certainly not the case. At this point, Icelandic is not even classified as vulnerable or threatened. It’s the official language of 331,000 native speakers. That may not seem like a lot compared to English. But it’s well over the “magic number” of 35,000 that economist David Clingingsmith recently identified as the number of speakers need to keep a language safe (assuming he’s correct). And most importantly, Icelanders are still teaching the language to their children.  |

Icelanders are still teaching the language to their children. But they have to put in an extra effort to keep up. Some teachers are already sensing a change among students in the scope of their Icelandic vocabulary and reading comprehension. Anna Jonsdottir, a teaching consultant, said she often hears teenagers speak English among themselves when she visits schools in Reykjavik, the capital. |

Maybe focusing more on English isn't such a bad thing. In some countries, they start teaching that language already in 1st grade now.
