Experts warn that the Icelandic language is at risk of dying out in the modern society. The widespread use of English in Iceland, both for tourism and for voice-controlled electronic devices, has slowly reduced the numbers of people speaking Icelandic to less than 400,000. The problem is made worse because many new computer devices are designed to recognise English, but not Icelandic. Preliminary studies suggest children at their first-language acquisition are increasingly not exposed to enough Icelandic to foster a strong base for later years. Throughout history, languages have come and gone. It's a natural thing. Withe increased globalization, some languages will become the vicims of English dominance.

Like many tongues, Icelandic is slowly gathering influence from other languages, mainly English. The linguistic purism that Icelandic developed due to centuries of isolation and the verbal battle for indepencence from Denmark is now under attack. To some Icelanders, the process of watering out syntax, grammar and vocabulary may seem as if their language is slowly dying.

I just read that the same thing is happening with the Sami tongues of Northern Norway. Who would have thought that English voice commands could be a threat to small languages?

I just came across this video where some Icelanders have taken the threat to kill their language seriously, so they have found a clever way to help save it by launching a tutorial to non-icelanders as "the Viking language"!
