Thanks! I know first hand how it is to be hospitalised in a foreign part of the world, so I wish Werner all the best. At least, he has his wife's family there.

They don't want to scare off tourists? Sounds like Jaws. They just don't want to say it was a shark. Best wishes to him.

There is always a shark risk on tropical beaches. I remember in Mogadishu, Somalia, there used to be a fish factory close to the beach where they dumped organic waste straight into the ocean. Talk about a buffet for sharks! Even after decades without activity in the plant, the concentration of sharks there was much higher than normal. A co-worker from Romania lost part of his arm from a bite by a small shark on shallow water, so after that, we were always on the alert. The Australian Army put up shark nets for a while, then the entire issue just slowly boiled away.

I think most people get bit in shallow water.

Could be. I have never reflected much on that, but it makes sense.

Most attacks occur in nearshore waters, typically inshore of a sandbar or between sandbars where sharks feed and can become trapped at low tide. Areas with steep drop-offs are also likely attack sites. Sharks congregate there because their natural food items also congregate in these areas. www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/odds/how-where-when/

We seem to think of the shark as a nuisance, an intruder on our beaches and a terrible monster, but by doing that, we forget whose territory the shallow waters off our coasts really is. We must adapt to the shark and not the other way around. We are the guest, even though the shark often mistakes us for its dinner.
