Keystone Pipeline leaks 210,000 gallons of oil in South Dakota
A total of 210,000 gallons of oil leaked Thursday from the Keystone Pipeline in South Dakota, the pipeline's operator, TransCanada, said.
Crews shut down the pipeline Thursday morning and officials are investigating the cause of the leak. This is the largest Keystone oil spill to date in South Dakota, said Brian Walsh, a spokesman for the state's Department of Environment and Natural Resources. In April 2016, there was a 400-barrel release -- or 16,800 gallons -- with the majority of the oil cleanup completed in two months, Walsh said.
Developing story - more to come

I guess that there will always be a risk of leak with pipelines and platforms. Luckily, it rarely happens; and hopefully even more so as oil and gas are being phased out in favour of more environmental-friendly sources of energy.

This is the same one that President Trump allowed through Indian land, right? Or at least I think he did.. That made me so mad.. Pipelines in general make me mad...

I guess that there will always be a risk of leak with pipelines and platforms. Luckily, it rarely happens; and hopefully even more so as oil and gas are being phased out in favour of more environmental-friendly sources of energy. From what I remember this has been a leaky pipeline from the start. All the ones I've heard about have leaks. I'm sure there are a lot of shorter ones that aren't a problem and naturally you never here about those. But it was a risk because they already had problems with it. To think those problems would end by making it longer...someone has a screw loose in their head. On May 7, 2011 a threaded connection failed on a Keystone Pipeline pump at a station in Sargent County, North Dakota, spilling about 400 barrels of crude oil. Due to a number of other leaks on this pipeline system, Keystone's owner, TransCanada Corporation, was given a Corrective Action Order by PHMSA But I also found this link that shows all the leaks all over the country. Just take a peek it's a lot worse than I thought. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pipeline_accidents_in_the_United_States_in_the_21st_century

Wow, it has an of about 20 leaks a year or one every 18 days on average! Sloppy design? Inappropriate materials? Bad planning? Human errors? All the above?

It's just unbelievable you would think they would come up with a better way or open refineries closer to the oil. Create more jobs in remote places. But I guess they create a lot of jobs all over cleaning up all the oil spills.
I think from what I've read it's all the above.

The Keystone Pipeline has been a controversial project for years.
Now, at this point in time, besides the fact that Trump broke his promise that only U.S. Steel would be used, there are many negative impacts of this pipeline which have been put forth for years.
There are many articles which discuss those negative impacts. They discuss the effect on animals, on oil production and on people.
Below is just one article which discuses the Keystone Pipeline.

5 Reasons Why the Keystone Pipeline is Bad for the Economy
The American labor movement is once again facing a most controversial issue — the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. While the KXL debate has largely centered around the environmental risks, from labor’s perspective opening up the Canadian Tar Sands is often seen as an economic, not an environmental, issue. And it’s no wonder: Construction unemployment is double the national average and, from a worker’s perspective, Keystone jobs will be good-paying union jobs in an economy that increasingly offers up only minimum-wage service work.
While labor leaders weigh the pros and cons of building KXL, they should keep in mind that the pipeline is as much a threat to our economy as it is to our planet. After a year of extreme weather — at an extreme cost to the economy — this age old jobs vs. environment debate is emerging as a false choice. Hurricanes, floods, and droughts are already having a devastating effect on American jobs, and that is nothing compared to what will happen if we throw open the spigot to the tar sands from Canada, considered the dirtiest oil in the world.
Here are 5 reasons why building the Keystone pipeline is bad for the economy — and workers.
1. Building the Keystone pipeline and opening up the Tar Sands will negatively impact national and local economies: Burning the recoverable tar sands oil will increase the earth’s temperature by a minimum of 2 degree Celsius, which NYU Law School’s Environmental Law Center estimates could permanently cut the US GDP by 2.5%. At the same time state and local economies are already buckling under the real-time economic effects of our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels. In the past two years, the vast majority of U.S. counties ““ 67 percent ““ were affected by at least one of the eleven $1 billion dollar extreme weather events. Superstorm Sandy alone caused an estimated $80 billion in damage. The drought that affected 80% of US farmland last summer destroyed a quarter of the US corn crop and did at least $20 billion damage to the economy.".

You think they are cynical enough to allow for bad maintenance to create disasters and thus more jobs on purpose? No I don't think it is on purpose, their livelihoods depend on the pipelines. But you have to take in the fact of Mother Nature and rapid changes in climate that can cause pipes, fitting and other construction issues. Also it is running across lands where people don't want it. Sabotage is always a factor too.

Sabotage is always a factor too. Then, the culprits must be stupid, crazy or both, to pollute their own turf!

What happened to "go green"? Some of us have been advocating that for a long time now. All of the advantages which you are surely aware of. But with this administration, and both a GOP controlled House and Senate it is very tough now to get anywhere. Actually to get anywhere on anything.
