Juli Briskman’s protest aimed at the presidential motorcade that roared past her while she was on her cycling path in Northern Virginia late last month became an instantly viral photo. Turns out it has now cost the 50-year-old marketing executive her job. On Halloween, after Briskman gave her bosses at Akima, a government contracting firm, a heads-up that she was the unidentified cyclist in the photo, they took her into a room and fired her, she said, escorting her out of the building with a box of her things. “I wasn’t even at work when I did that,” Briskman said. “But they told me I violated the code-of-conduct policy.” Her bosses at Akima, who have not returned emails and calls requesting comment, showed her the blue-highlighted Section 4.3 of the firm’s social-media policy when they canned her." Good. She flipped off the President. That's fine but she works for a company that depends on the Government for jobs, it is a a government contracting firm. She's an idiot and she got what she deserved. How stupid can you be?

I agree. I believe they were well within their rights to terminate given all the circumstances.

Joey, it has nothing to do with the fact it was Trump at least not for me. She flipped off the President of the United States while employed by a Company who's lively hood is getting jobs from the Government. If she worked for Toyota and flipped off the Japanese head of state she would have been fired. To me she brought it on herself.

I'm with @justbec on this one...it's not about the specific person, would've been just as wrong had the President in question been Obama. She works for a government funded company, she can't flip off the head of the government and not expect to pay the consequences.

To everybody...
I believe it is simpler than that.
This company has a written policy that forbids employees having obscenities in their social media.
This employee flipped off Trump's motorcade, the AP took a photo which went viral.
She went to her bosses and she told them that she was the person in that photo.
At that point her bosses had to deal with her violating the company's policy.
It was at their discretion how to discipline her.
They chose to terminate her which I believe was within their rights.
This has nothing at all with it being Trump. If it had been Obama the answer would still be the same.
Personal politics should not play into how this is looked at.
Also the First Amendment does not protect this woman under these circumstances if some people thinks it does. She is allowed to think what she wants about President Trump, but, she was not allowed to make an obscene gesture that ended up in her social media, bring it to the attention of her bosses and not be subject to their written policy regarding obscenity in one's social media.

Do you humans realize how lucky you are to have .. fingers? much less a middle one to express yourself! And you are lucky to have beauty and speed. Besides using your middle finger to flip off people in my opinion is rude.

To add to the company's position is the fact that Virginia is an employment-at-will state.
She had been working at the company for 6 months a the time.
But regardless of her duration at the company, if you work in an employment-at-will state then a company can terminate you without giving you any cause in short.
I know a lot of people are unhappy will this but this woman did make an obscene gesture to the president's motorcade, the photo was captured by the AP.
Rather than being upset by that, she posted it herself on her FB account and made it her Twitter image.
She also worked part-time at a yoga studio. That yoga studio began receiving threats once it was known that it was her in that photo.
Though the company did not have to go to written policy was she told them it was her, they had both written policy and employment-at-will to support their decision.
One article said one thing they were considering was the safety of their employees now that it was known that it was here it that photo.
I have not stated my political leanings on purpose in this thread. That is because they are not relevant to discussing this situation.

Actually, until my latest post the fact that VA is a employment-at-will state had not been brought up.
Also the facts that after AP took the photo, she went out of her way to post the photo to he FB account as to make it her Twitter Avatar.
The first puts the company on even more solid ground given what employment-at-will means.

Actually I think we all can understand that any Company has conduct rules, especially when they can hurt the Company. Don't need to be a genius to figure out if you do something to make your Company look bad or hurt their business, you will be fired. My Company had that rule, you signed that you understood when you were hired.
