www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/nov/07/facebook-revenge-porn-nude-photosFacebook asks users for nude photos in project to combat revenge porn In Australia pilot effort, company will ‘hash’ images, converting them into digital fingerprints that prevent any other attempts to upload the same pictures "Facebook is asking users to send the company their nude photos in an effort to tackle revenge porn, in an attempt to give some control back to victims of this type of abuse. Individuals who have shared intimate, nude or sexual images with partners and are worried that the partner (or ex-partner) might distribute them without their consent can use Messenger to send the images to be “hashed”. This means that the company converts the image into a unique digital fingerprint that can be used to identify and block any attempts to re-upload that same image. Facebook is piloting the technology in Australia in partnership with a government agency headed up by the e-safety commissioner, Julia Inman Grant, who told ABC it would allow victims of “image-based abuse” to take action before pictures were posted to Facebook, Instagram or Messenger. “We see many scenarios where maybe photos or videos were taken consensually at one point, but there was not any sort of consent to send the images or videos more broadly,” she told the Australian broadcaster. Carrie Goldberg, a New York-based lawyer who specializes in sexual privacy, said: “We are delighted that Facebook is helping solve this problem – one faced not only by victims of actual revenge porn but also individuals with worries of imminently becoming victims.". This has also reached the Norwegian media. I interpret it as an attempt to fight fire with fire. But what I don't understand is this weird urge many people have to distribute nude pics of themselves around the 'Net in the first place. Once you have crossed that line, you have to face the consequences. Facebook is only providing a means of damage control, IMO.

Actually, it is other people you have been involved with who have nude photos of you that have been posting those photos of you without your permission Amazon is attempting to combat in this initiative. It is a pilot program only in Australia. I really do not think it is a very good idea. I certainly would not trust Amazon with nudes of me in the off chance that an ex tries to exact revenge porn.

Why would Amazon be involved?? They have no connection to Facebook...

Yes, but Tix Mascot's point was that if you hadn't posed for nude pictures in the first place there would be nothing for anyone to post. I agree on that...don't understand the fascination with posing nude and certainly not with sharing your intimate photos on a platform where they could easily become public. That's just asking for trouble.

Then again anyone putting up their own nude pictures can't be real bright to start with.

Surprisingly many people learn the hard way that it pays off to guard your privacy a little better. Hopefully, others will think twice before they store nude pics on electronic devices. If not, I certainly don't feel sorry for them.

In perspective: Your bedroom is no longer a private sphere, since the entire world in principle has access to it via web cams, either live or recorded.

Only if you leave it open to those cameras...you still have some control over it.

Lys and I have increasingly become worried about the possibility of a drone hovering outside our bedroom window filming us as we wake up one morning. Not that we walk around naked or anything, but the thought is still kinda scary...

Facebook is the last place to post stuff you want totally private. Then again anyone putting up their own nude pictures can't be real bright to start with. You can say that again, @justbec. ... on two accounts: First to leave pics in uncomfortable places, then use the media to complain when you have been screwed! smiley-confused013
