At risk of it seeming like some sort of self-righteous pontification over an issue that doesn't really matter too much, I dare claim that there are far more important and interesting things in life that don't involve whether or not you hold membership of a social networking website.
However, it's a question that I've been asked innumerable times. It invariably goes something like this:
"I'll add you on Facebook."
"I'm not on Facebook."
- shock and disbelief -
"What?! Why not?"
There are actually countless reasons, but I have listed the most important to me:
Facebook doesn't have your interests at heart.
Private information will be used for other purposes.
Your social life becomes public domain.
People are not single, flat entities that fit onto one page.
Ten seconds after you have logged on, three "friends" send you angry reminders why you haven't replied to their messages.
I'm not interested in reading what other people had for supper last night.
The idea that we need Facebook or we will lose touch with people is repugnant. People that care about keeping in touch with each other always will do and the rest? I'm happier without their mundane interactions anyway. A forum like this is way more user-friendly, rsepectful and social than the likes of Facebook and MySpace anyway...

Never saw many valid points with social media. Guess I'm old fashioned.

Every time I read one of these I laugh. Big brother can watch me all he wants. I assure you he will die of boredom rather quickly. People are so paranoid these days. I am on FB, have been for over 10 years now. I love it, so much I even moved my forum there and closed the one I had on Runboard. I have more people and posts than I ever did when Paradise Lost was a messageboard. I have met people from all over the world and consider them real friends. We even exchange Christmas gifts. Facebook is simple, you just have to invest about 5 minutes of your life making sure you have security set right. Then you don't have to see what people had for dinner unless you want to. I don't know about losing touch with people but I know I found 2 friends I haven't talked to in over 30 years. One was my best friend in High School and College but after I moved to NY we lost touch. Come to find out she still lives right outside of Minneapolis and is coming to visit over Halloween. I would have never found her if not for Facebook. So don't knock it until you've tried it, the right way, with a little effort.

Bravo, @justbec, couldn't agree more. I, too, have reconnected with a few people with whom I had lost touch, so I will never find fault with FB. As you said, provided you use it correctly the good FAR outweighs the bad. And yes, if Big Brother wants to see what I'm doing let him...like you, I think he'd find my comings and goings pretty boring.
