UNDER SIEGE, JARED KUSHNER GOES ON THE ATTACK
As the White House descends into chaos, the president’s son-in-law reportedly shifts onto the offensive.
"Speaking aboard Air Force One on his way to celebrate equality, liberty, and fraternity in France, Donald Trump turned his attention to the interlinked problems currently plaguing his presidency: paternity and Putin. Explaining that he only recently found out that his son Donald Jr. and son-in-law Jared Kushner had met with a Kremlin-connected lawyer in the hope of scoring damaging information about Hillary Clinton, he downplayed the entire Russian imbroglio as overhyped. “What do you do? End up in a fistfight?” he joked, describing his apparently ineffectual attempt to get Vladimir Putin to confess to election interference when the two met in Hamburg, Germany, last week. Back in Washington, however, the mood at the White House was hardly bucolic. While the president’s inner circle has not yet descended into physical fist-fighting, the West Wing has been hard hit by a storm of suspicion and sparring, with Kushner reportedly at its center.
Citing six sources familiar with the matter, Politico reports that Kushner has pushed for the White House to respond to the unfolding Donnygate drama with more force but has been met with resistance from a raft of Trump’s top aides, some of whom argue the issue is an outside matter, and should thus be dealt with externally. Kushner disagrees, arguing that, as the scandal affects Trump’s presidency, it should be handled with urgency by the in-White House communications shop.
It is not hard to divine the shadow of an agenda. If the impact of the meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya on Trump’s presidency is not yet quantifiable, the impact it has on Kushner’s reputation seems more immediately tangible. Eagerly seeking out Russian-sponsored intelligence on Clinton makes Trump Jr. look this word has been censoredic, but it makes Kushner, who works in the White House, looks utterly shady, especially since he neglected to mention the meeting on a security form back in January, when he originally applied for clearance. (Veselnitskaya has denied having ties to the Kremlin.)".
