Substitute Bus Driver Builds Girl A Wheelchair Ramp After Seeing Mom Struggle

Thomas Mitchell is a mechanic from Clarksville, Tennessee, who fills in as a substitute bus driver for the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System when he's needed. His route occasionally includes bringing a group of special needs children to school.

One morning, Mitchell noticed a mother struggling to bring her daughter, who is in a wheelchair, down the front steps of her porch. He couldn't shake the image from his head. He wanted to do something to help this family out.

So, a few days later, he called the mother and offered to build a customized wheelchair ramp for her daughter — free of charge.

Mitchell gathered tools, co-workers and a few friends to help him. He even got a local Lowe's Home Improvement store to donate the lumber.

A few months after the initial phone call, Mitchell and his crew arrived at the family's home and started working. In less than three hours, the little girl got the ramp she needed.

Puppy Rescued From Well After 11 Days is Adopted by Firefighters Who Saved It

This sweet puppy who enraptured the nation may not have made it out of this gaping well if it weren’t for an entire community making sure that it survived.


Residents of Beykoz, Turkey heard whimpering coming from a nearby well that plunged 200 feet into the earth. After confirming that there was a small dog trapped at the bottom, firefighters, rescue crews, and animal rescue teams flooded the area to assess the situation.

A camera that was lowered into the hole showed that the canine looked frightened, but was alive and relatively unharmed.

Hero Louisiana Police Dog Finds Missing 14-Year-old with Autism

The St. Tammany Police Department is recognizing one of its own for a job well done.

Her name is Freya, and she’s the police K-9 who successfully recovered a missing 14-year-old on Tuesday in Louisiana.

According to a Facebook post shared by the department, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Lacomb on Valentine’s Day after the teen went missing.

“Deputies canvassed the area for hours, searching for the child,” the post said, adding that the Bavarian mountain hound and her handler, Deputy Ron Olivier, were next called to the scene. “K-9 Freya, who specializes in finding lost children, took the scent from the missing child’s clothes, and started searching. After approximately twenty minutes, K-9 Freya found the missing child, curled up, hiding in the woods.”

While definitely scared, the child was found in good heath, said the post, which also called Freya “a hero” for her efforts.

“This potential tragic story finished with a happy ending,” said Sheriff Randy Smith in a statement. “Our canines are amazing animals who are invaluable to our deputies and citizens.”

Teen Who Walked 5 Hours To Work Now Drives, Thanks To Police


A California teen used to walk nearly five hours to and from work every day, but thanks to the kindness of local police officers and support from their community, he can now drive the distance.

Through a successful GoFundMe campaign, the Benicia Police Department raised more than $40,000 for Jourdan Duncan. The 18-year-old used the money to buy a Volkswagen Passat to get to his job as a packaging line worker.



He's also taking classes, and studying to become a California Highway Patrol Officer.



"They're setting an example of what a good community is," Duncan said. "I thought maybe that could be me — maybe I can have a change in our society and change in the community."



It's no wonder Duncan looks up to law enforcement — it was the Benicia Police Department's kindness that changed his life in September.



Duncan recalls walking home late one night when he said he saw the flashing lights of a police car come up behind him.



"I said, 'Uh-oh, I hope I didn't do anything,'" Duncan told Inside Edition.



Corporal Kirk Keffer, with the Benicia Police Department, pulled up behind him, and waved him over.



"It's dark; there's no sidewalks," Keffer said. "I asked him where he was walking to, and he says, 'Home.'"



So, Keffer offered Duncan a ride.



Along the way, Duncan mentioned his car had broken down, and he had no other way to get to and from his job than to walk nearly five hours both ways.



"I had to start saving up little by little," Duncan said, explaining that his paychecks went toward helping out his parents, paying tuition for college, and saving up for a new car. "It's a pretty peaceful walk. I just put in my headphones, play my music."



Keffer said he was impressed, and sympathetic to his cause.



"People use as an obstacle not to work," Keffer said. "I wanted to make sure that he understood a good work ethic and dedication like that is going to be noticed and rewarded."



Keffer went back to his department after dropping the teen off, and asked his superiors if there was anything they could do for him.



They eventually gathered some extra money from their department's account, and surprised Duncan with a brand new bicycle.



"He helped make my life easier," Duncan said, adding that his commute time was reduced to only 50 minutes in one direction. "They care about their community, they care about their people and they care to help us."



Inspired by what good a little money could do, the police department then started a GoFundMe page for Duncan that turned his life upside down just months later.



"Every chance we get to help somebody out we try to do it," Keffer said.
