I'm not a fan of govt generally, but there are a couple systems/issues within that bother me more than the others. They are:
capitalism: any system that puts money as it's goal over people is built on a false god. The resources are meant to work for the people, not be a goal in and of themselves.
meritocracy: It presumes that all people have equal access to the resources it takes to get ahead of their circumstance and succeed. That's more often not the case.
electoral groups (colleges) vs one vote-one person systems - If I am a tax paying, responsible citizen then my vote should be counted when there is an election. Especially if the vote is about something that is relevant to their needs.
bigotry - any system that tolerates hatred and limits a group of people because of something they cannot change, nor should they have to. Especially if they promote Eugenics.
theocracies - there should be a divide between religion/culture and the "state". To allow for multiple peoples in one land without institutional bigotry.
No govt system has ever succeeded in a pure form of itself, partly due to power-seeking people who cannot see the harm they do and because govt needs to be large to serve all the people. In it's large state, it becomes a bureaucracy full of misled, uber-focused, misdirected resources and goals. It is meant to serve the people, not the leaders. It is meant to serve it's own nation, not the world. It is meant to focus on trade, tourism and a safety net for the people, as well as the infrastructure. Not on divisive policies that are pro-business and pro-lobby groups. To the point where the people are not served.
The govt leaders are too easily bought and sold, and the people are improperly served, if they are served at all. IMO

Communism the way it's theoretically defined is an ideal form of government. Unfortunately, it has been practiced in a quite different way, with bureaucracy, corruption and dictatorship, e.g. in the former Soviet Union, China and North Korea.
Theocracy is another type that is heavily linked to a specific religion, which dictates the agenda for a country's politics, like Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Very few people in the West would want their freedom and democracy to be restricted by such regimes.

geriatrix, great minds think alike. I was just adding theocracy Before we beleaguer communism, a reminder: no system in the history of the world has worked as a pure one. And it's always for the same reasons. Bureaucracy and corruption. Even hybrids we have tried don't work for the same reasons.

As the saying goes, 'only the wrong sort of people will ever be in power because only the wrong sort of people will ever want power.'

Is this your subtle way of implying that we are screwed no matter what? I don't agree at all with MikeMarshall. There are people who actually care. In the U.S., I am hoping for a Warren/Sanders ticket. I'm in my mid-twenties and don't think that we are beyond hope or redemption.

Perhaps I have a skewed view because I have been in university for seven out of ten years, but most of the people I know are proactive and have progressive leanings.

As the saying goes, 'only the wrong sort of people will ever be in power because only the wrong sort of people will ever want power.' Hey mike... How very good to see you posting here. Yes, I do know that saying. But I do see some of the right people in power as I type this and I see many more of them striving for it.

I agree there have and are people in the US that want to do the right thing Sadly there are few of them at the moment. I guess that depends on your idea of the right thing. There are lots of men and women out there doing the right thing day in and day out. The govt leaders are too easily bought and sold, and the people are improperly served, if they are served at all. IMO mikemarshall , it's nice to see you here. That statement is so very true! I have always enjoyed your posts. I don't comment a lot but I do enjoy reading your thoughts on things.

Thank you. I am well aware that my opinions on many subjects are not widely shared! World would be a boring place if we always agreed. A different point of view on things is good to have.

A different point of view on things is good to have. And we learn much useful from good arguments in a debate, regardless of whether they support or oppose our own position. That's why forums like this help widen our horizons. my opinions on many subjects are not widely shared I've been there, too, mikemarshall! I know that some of my threads are provocative and rock the boat (something that, I have to admit, may even have been my intention), but I have learned to accept criticism as long as it's respectful.

Disagreement can lead to both progress and war, depending on how the participants perceive it.
