There are still some areas under U.S. control that are not states. U.S. territories include: American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C.. The last two states to join the union were Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. Since America hasn't added a new state in 60 years, some people believe that the nation is complete at 50 states. In the history of the United States, the longest period between states is the current period. But others disagree and think that sooner or later, one of the territories listed above will become the 51st state. Which, in your opinion, should it be and why?

Puerto Rico because DC can't become a state as per Constitution. Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17

^ if that's true we need to amend the Constitution
I think they should all get statehood.

It's similar to the way many Norwegians regard our associated membership attachment to the EU. Billions of our tax money go there, while we have no representatives in Brussels and have to accept most decisions according to the agreement. But as long as the majority doesn't want full membership, what can we "yes-people" do?

If he gets elected, I'm sure the US will be a different country after 4 years and I guess that not all Americans will be happy with the changes...

I don't think Trump knows the difference. He's going to run the country under the Trump constitution. So maybe we won't have to pay taxes for the next 18 years.
Myself I think they should get rid of the Electoral College. In this day and age it isn't needed. Newspapers are everywhere as is TV so every one voting knows who they want. But NOoooo they need them to vote for us. So if 51% vote for Trump and 49% vote for Hillary the 49% don't even count and the whole state goes to Trump. It might have made sense 200 years ago but it makes no sense now. So when they say every vote counts it's a lie.

Like everywhere, it's hard to get rid of outdated practices. People (and lawmakers) tend to cling on to them for their bare lives, even if it means curbing progress. If I remember correctly, it cost Gore the victory over Bush in Florida and thus the entire country.
Would adding a 51st state change the traditional voting system in some ways that could impact the outcome of an election?

I don't know but I would guess that they would just add more votes to the electoral college.

Puerto Rico gets to vote in the primary but not in the election itself. I was thinking they got to vote because I saw them at the political conventions. That's about right Bestem♥r, that's what they would get. But to me it all comes down to your vote may or my not count. You are right geriatrix, Gore had more popular votes and we got stuck with Bush for 8 long years. Makes you wonder how things might have been different if Gore would have won...like he should have. All other people on the ballot win or lose by popular vote, so why isn't it the same for the president and vice president?

I read that the so-called "founding fathers" didn't trust the common people to be responsible for electing people to the nation's top offices, so they appointed electors to "act in their best interest". And for unknown reasons, this arrangement has never been changed, not even 240 years later, when most other countries have direct democratic elections.

And that is what the US tries to push off on other countries, the democratic way, yet me don't do it ourselves. Seems to me if you still wanted to use this out dated system, it the vote is split close to 50/50 in a state that's how the electoral college should vote, but no, all the votes go to one person in each state.
I'm banging my head on the wall trying to figure out why this hasn't been changed.

why this hasn't been changed Most likely because old-fashioned lawmakers in the Congress want to keep a long tradition.
