Speaking to Google's Zeitgeist Conference in Hertfordshire, the author of A Brief History of Time said that fundamental questions about the nature of the universe could not be resolved without hard data such as that currently being derived from the Large Hadron Collider and space research. "Most of us don't worry about these questions most of the time. But almost all of us must sometimes wonder: Why are we here? Where do we come from? Traditionally, these are questions for philosophy, but philosophy is dead," he said. "Philosophers have not kept up with modern developments in science. Particularly physics.”" Prof Hawking went on to claim that "Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge." He said new theories "lead us to a new and very different picture of the universe and our place in it". In a 40-minute speech, Prof Hawking said that the new "M Theory" of the universe was "the unified theory Einstein was hoping to find". He compared the idea to the computer programme Google Earth, saying it was "a map of theories", but added that a new, bigger Hadron Collider the size of the Milky Way was needed to collect more data to prove it. "This technology is some way off," he said "and I don't think even Google could afford to build it."

I disagree with Hawking: In the foreseeable future, science is unable to replace philosophy completely, although it may reduce the need for it in some areas.

The less we read, socialize, and take the time to ponder the mysteries of the universe, the less need we have for philosophy.

Here is an interesting critique of Hawkings in this area. IMO too many people think that Hawkings is the be all and end all when he has spoken on a subject. www.timeshighereducation.com/news/is-philosophy-dead/2018686.article#survey-answerIs philosophy dead? Leading philosophers took up the challenge of Stephen Hawking’s claim that “philosophy is dead” "In 2010, Professor Hawking declared that scientists rather than philosophers “have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge”. Philosophers argued their case at a debate held at the British Academy in London this week. According to Tim Crane, Knightbridge professor of philosophy at the University of Cambridge, Professor Hawking himself proved that philosophy is unavoidable, since he put forward a lot of philosophical views. Unfortunately, these amounted to “bad philosophy, because he is unaware of it as a discipline and a practice with a history,” Professor Crane said. Greg Radick, professor of the history and philosophy of science at the University of Leeds, put the case for cross-fertilisation between science and philosophy. Three of the most powerful scientific thinkers – Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and Noam Chomsky – were also notably “philosophically literate”, he said. Lesser scientists could easily become “too dogmatic”, as their “teachers shut down access to foundational questions”, Professor Radick told the event, held on 15 February. Philosophical debate, on the other hand, he continued, ran the risk of nit-picking “scholasticism” if it wasn’t “enlivened by contact with the natural sciences”.". While Hawking was a scientist that hadn't much need for philosophy, I and many others will find it useful for a long time to come.
