Pro: They unite diverse groups of people, represent a larger issue base, provide an already well-functioning administratibe government system, recruit and groom good candidates for office, plus share resources, power and action.
Con: They may cause a gridlock in a country's politics, could spark compromises and thus lead to a weaker legislation, create misrepresentation and thereby biased decisions out of sync with the majority of voters or cause minorities to have less of a voice. Party pressure may also cause politicians to lose their individuality and ultimately, we have the danger of corruption.

pro: you can't have a true democracy with just one party, yet bottom line with all the deals that get made and special interest politicking done, there really isn't much separation.
con: it often reduces people's perceived credibility when they align with a specific party.

Having a few parties is good for democracy. The optimal is probably 3-4, to reflect diversity in the population's opinions and still be strong enough to govern.
