Pro: We should embrace diversity of every individual, i.e. those that don't fit into either the socially created "male, female" classifications. Everyone is different and yet, we are all the same, so why not make things easier for all those that don't fit into any boxes and more forward into acceptance? Multi-stall gender-neutral washrooms are the way to go, because gender segregation is wrong and based on the idea that "men" and "women" are the only choices to pigeonhole people into. Segregation is also wrong because, it creates a "us and them" mentality between the sexes and harms gender equality. When we unite all people and do away with gender segregation, then we all build a better society!
Con: A transgender person being forced to use a bathroom that is designed primarily for one sex rather than another would be disadvantaged, but how many people are actually transgenders? Are we supposed to build them an entirely separate facility and if we did, would that not make them stand out more as being different? It would be a huge monetary investment designed to be politically correct to a very low percentage of the population. More people will be comfortable with separated restrooms than using gender-neutral restrooms, for reasons of safety, including the risk of being confronted by stalkers, voyeurs and and offenders.

I'm concerned about the costs of rebuilding existing restrooms versus using that money for something more sensible. But I also think that the idea should be tested out for new locations, to harvest valuable experience for future enterprises. As increasingly more people are coming out of the closet and identifying themselves with other gender variations than strictly male and female, it could be a valid way to check whether the pros outweigh the cons.

Personally I think it is not as complicated as some people seem to think it is.

The possible voyeur/stalker/offender aspect must be seriously considered before such solutions are implemented.
