Pro: You get educational information on your site through establishing a constructive environment, increase traffic through repeat visitors and build relationships with the users. Everything that is posted is being picked up by crawler bots from search engines and spread throughout the www. People are given time to research and consider their comments before replying, which allows for high-quality discussions. Ultimately, you may create a robust online community. This will in turn draw more knowledgeable members and their posts thus create lots of information and tips that other visitors can use.
Con: Creating a successful forum involves a tremendous amount of work. Nobody likes to post on an empty forum so you must actively promote it and create lots of topics for discussion yourself on a continuous basis for months before a steady flow of topics and replies are posted by your forums members. Next you need to administer it by making sure posts are appropriate and that members are not spamming your forum. This has to be done on a daily basis and if your forum gets busy, it's going to be very time consuming.

it's going to be very time consuming. Yes, I have discovered that, too. I was much more active on forums before, but I eventually got bored for several reasons. Few people replied to my posts and if they did, they often became hostile. I also received sleazy PMs on some sites, particularly if I used my own face as an avatar, so I have stopped doing that. Luckily, I haven't had any negative experiences here yet, but I have to admit that although a friend told me about Heretix, I staked out the place for a long time and I even test-posted under various guest names before I registered a profile. My preferred area of interest is computers and tech solutions, so there is where you will find me most of the time.
