Pro: Prostitution should not be a crime. Prostitutes are not committing an inherently harmful act. While the spread of disease and other detriments are possible in the practice of prostitution, criminalization is a sure way of exacerbating rather than addressing such effects. We see this quite clearly whenever alcohol prohibition is an issue. What makes prostitution 'a victimless crime' in the sense that no one is necessarily harmed by it is that there are consenting adults involved.
Con: Prostitution creates a setting whereby crimes against men, women and children become a commercial enterprise. It is an assault when a prostitute is forced to engage in sadomasochistic activity. When a pimp compels a prostitute to submit to sexual demands as a condition of employment, it is exploitation, sexual harassment or even rape - acts that are based on the prostitute's compliance rather than their consent. The fact that a pimp or customer gives money to a prostitute for submitting to these acts does not alter the fact that child sexual abuse, rape and/or battery occurs; it merely redefines these crimes as prostitution.

I think that it's utopian to believe that there never will exist prostitution in some form, so we need to find the best way to deal with it. In a free market, one will probably see all kinds of abuse, so maybe the middle ground is adviceable here, like in so many other areas? Legalise it in controlled surroundings, then outlaw all other activity? It's a tough question that most politicians try to avoid.

They say prostitution is the oldest profession. Perhaps if it was legalized and regulated there would be a way to keep younger people out of it as well as take the criminal acts of the "pimp" out of the equation? I know prostitution is not going to go away simply because it is illegal. As long as it is behind closed doors it will continue to be a dangerous place especially for the young who are recruited.

i disagree , it is wrong on so many levels that making it legal just condones it , same with drugs i dont agree with legalising that either, its the easy way out. sometimes a society has to stick by it's principles too many times they go by the wayside.

It's not something I would ever consider myself but a lot of these women *and men* have no option some are just young kids. But for those who do mke thst choice on their own I reckon should be more protected. A lot of these women end up dead in a ditch & I would never say they deserve that. They are in a sese providing a service. Not saying legalise it but find way to make them feel safer *I dunno I'm no longer making sense*

I understand what you mean, Fanofdorks. Although most people can agree that prostitution is an undesireable side of our socitety, we are unable to wish it away, so we have to live with it in some form. I agree with you that there are many victims involved and that we somehow will have to face this issue, which few politicians want to touch. In the meantime, this "merchandise" continues to be sold and bought, while AIDS and other deseases are being spread, teenagers' lives are being ruined and the pimps' wallets are getting thicker...

Make it legal, shine some light on it and the dark and dangerous factors should scatter. IMO I agree you can't wish things away or ignore them and pretend they don't exist, that helps nobody.

Wrong or right, I feel that no matter if it is legal or not it is going to and has always happened. At least if it is regulated and monitored, it might just be a little bit safer? Just a thought.
