According to the Norwegian aid magazine Bistandsaktuelt, the world has experienced a significant progress over the last decades. The details are as follows: 90% of the population has now access to clean drinking water. During the last 25 years, the number of malnutreated people has decreased from 19% to 11% and the number of mothers dying in childbirth been reduced by 45%. 1.9 billion people were extremely poor in 1990. Now, the number is less than 10%. In 1989, only 69 countries were rated as democracies, while we have 125 nations evaluated according to the same standards in 2016.

It seems as if the progress is greatest in the East Asia/Pacific region. Here is an updated chart. And the definition of "poverty" appears to have been upgraded to 1.90 dollars a day.

So everything isn't heading straight to pot after all, then.
But USD 1.90 a day still seems a little low to be on the upside of the poverty line, IMO.
