I'm seriously contemplating whether or not to go offline.
What are the main reasons for this, given that I personally need to interact where I find it more difficult to in an offline world.
Well firstly if you analyse it outside of the box and look at it in different ways, I can equate it to something like people choosing not to have children (well played them) or the people who are in Luddite Lane and choose not to have a television set.
You know I think I prefer the medium of radio anyway, I remember a quote that said that radio was 'thinking man's television'.
So how do we stop and think about what the intentions of the worldwide web are? What are the pros and cons? What are the things that would make a person think about going offline?
Security and safety? Even the less gullible may engage with and fall victim to scamming.
Porn online? I admit I watch and download a fair bit of adult content but I can tell you that I don't agree with it's existence particularly where it is freely accessible to minors.
I have even gone as far as thinking about installing something like Websense, a programming that would block all the keywords and ultimately, access to adult content.
Here's a good one, what about privacy with regard to whatever it is you are trying to do? All the things that happen when you are online. I'm talking about pop-ups in particular, you are continually asked whether you want this or are interested in that; no, I would actually like to be left alone to do what I was trying to do in the first place.
If I post a topic, the host site (usually news related) will have an irritating video advertising some sort of rubbish that you need to get rid of.
YouTube - the same kind of thing, you are expected to sit through 20 seconds of advertising before you see your chosen video.
So just a few reasons there to start a debate about the web, your experiences and opinions on what it does both good and bad and most of all, would you consider going offline and living a life without it?

t1236 ...and a very reflective/intelligent one to boot!
I sometimes go places where there is no Internet connection available and I have no problem with that as long as its only for some days, even a few weeks. But most of my life is now connected to the web one way or another, like my online bank services and the benefit from the Employment Service, so if I neglect to maintain my commitments there, I'd be broke very soon.
I have never searched for porn, because I'm not interested in other people's nudity and intimate details. However, many times, there pop up ads and even automatic transfers to porn sites, which annoyes me. Well, it's not just the porn, but anything that I didn't ask for, really...
I could very well do without the Youtube ads, too, but I understand that such companies must earn money to stay alive, so I grudgingly accept it. LOL
Conclusion: The pros by far outweigh the cons; my life would have been very boring and primitive without online access!

I enjoy the internet very much but when we travel I could be weeks away and can say I don't miss it. Doing something different but when I get back I appreciate it very much.

What I cannot understand, though, is people that must be online with their cell phones everywhere and at all times. I have an old Nokia with phone and text, that's all I need. I'd gone crazy if I should be walking around with Internet in my pocket. LOL

Agree about people walking around with the cell phones then all of a sudden they stop in front of you to read something and you have a collision. Mine is just used to call some one and text. Of an evening I may have it by me to check the internet when the ads are on t.v.

I spend a week or two every year off the grid. It takes some getting used to, no google to settle arguments. lol
Good article.

When Lys and I go to Italy for 11 days around Christmas, I will not be able to do much online work and I think that my mind will benefit from it. Over the last year, I have been very busy with my many big projects, which means that I have been mostly working with word processing documents and some online research in between. Therefore, I haven't been able to attend to my own forum as much as had hoped and also barely had any time to visit other sites. I hope that this will improve when we enter 2016, though.

The Internet has changed people's lives in ways that we could't foresee even ten years ago. Like electricity, we have become so dependent on it that we will have a hard time living without it.
Maybe it's not a bad idea to follow the example of some posters above and pull the plug for some days or weeks once in a while to take a break from all the online stress?
But I have noticed that some of us are more addicted than others. Just as smokers start to crave another cigarette after a while, hardline Internet users begin to get fidgety and eventually pull their device out of the pocket to check messages, mails or social media posts. I'm happy that I'm not quite there yet...

I enjoy the freedom to be able to go online when I want but also being able to walk away. People that sit online 12 and 14 hours a day are just scary. So are the people who have a cell phone who can't go anywhere without their phone. Mine sits on the counter never used. If I go out it's in my purse and never taken out unless I have to make a call

All kinds of strange diseases pop up as the result of overexposure to electronical devices, like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Computer Vision Syndrome, musculo-skeletal problems, sleep disorders and various mental problems. I hardly think that the expers have even diagnosed everyting accurately yet.
