In this time of a federal election, I thought it would be important to review just what Canada is. We are not technically an independent nation, though the Queen of England rarely acts within our borders and is mostly neutral in politics. She is still our titular head of state. This means that though elected by the citizens of Canada two days ago, Justin Trudeau is only our minister as long as it pleases her Majesty. Her Majesty has yet to refuse support to an elected Prime Minister since 1867, when we became a nation or since 1967, when the British North American Act (the Canadian constitution) was brought home to Canada (by interestingly enough Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Justin's father). Here are some articles which give you an idea of her current role.

t1236 Very interesting stuff!
I know that there is a movement in Australia that wants to cut all ties with Britain and declare the nation as a republic. The first step is to choose a new flag without the Union Jack in it. Are there similar intitiatives in process in Canada as well (not about the flag, I mean, since it's already unique)?

Not really, it's not like she intrudes. There are complaints when her visits cost a fortune, (up side they bring in tourist dollars) but we have a lot of royalists here. Unlike USA, India and maybe Australia(?), we have never had a conflict with the crown. Maybe it's laziness but I guess we figure if it aint broke...

How about the seperatists in Quebec? I haven't heard anything from them in maybe a decade. Has the situation settled, or is it still bubbling below the surface?

They actually took a vote a few years back and separatism was vetoed. The majority of Quebecois want to remain in Canada. This issue goes back to when the English and French warred in Canada. Some people just never got over the fact they lost. There have also been some language and culture laws that have caused rifts between Quebec and the rest of the country. We also had a period when the Bloc Quebecois was our opposition party in Ottawa. Not that long ago either. I believe it still has official party status as of Monday(?) So maybe they actually see sensitivity by the rest of Canada now. There was talk of them becoming a USA state at one point.

There was talk of them becoming a USA state at one point. Wow! I didn't know that! I studied Canadian matters many years ago, but I haven't had the possibility to follow up lately. Did I mention that I was there in 1982 (BC) and 1985 (Alberta and BC); winter both times. LOL

As a constitutional monarch, the Queen abides by the decisions of the Canadian Government, while continuing to play important ceremonial and symbolic roles. In all these duties, the Queen acts as Queen of Canada, quite distinctly from her role in the United Kingdom or any of her other realms. Over the course of more than 60 years and over 20 Royal Tours, Her Majesty’s Canadian tours have included stops in each of the thirteen provinces and territories, often playing a key role in national celebrations and recognizing achievement in all walks of life.
Wait a minute! Didn't I just type 20 visits in 60 years? So, we actually have a British monarch that moonlights as our head of state. The Canadian monarchy is like a part-time party clown that shows up at kid's birthday parties to entertain everyone, but then goes back to their real job as prison warden or whatever. So I suggest that the time is overdue that we, figuratively speaking, behead the Canadian monarchy.
