Lester B Pearson was a liberal. Justin may be emulating him in his politics, rather than following totally in his dad's. Though I can't remember Pierre ever engaging in external conflicts. He did call for martial law in Quebec at one point. I'd have to look that up if you want to know?

I'm not really that concerned about yesterday's wine, so please don't bother on my behalf. No, I'd rather like to be kept informed of how Justin's holding his hand on the helm once he has the command of the ship. Did he announce any specific promises that he is supposed to keep and was that part of the reason why he won the election? Sidetrack: Several times, various political parties in Norway have promised hot meals in schools, free dental services and other attractive issues, but they have never beeen implemented. Voters seem to have a very short memory. Here, we call it "election bacon". LOL (end of digression).

We get a lot of election bacon too. I never really kept up on Justin's promises. I knew I wasn't voting liberal. Though I do know he has said he would make marijuana legal. It has been tolerated for medicinal purposes to the point where the govt was even dispensing it. The Conservatives were making a fuss cuzz they thought it meant he was immature to make that a campaign issue. I think it's a good idea. Marijuana costs a fortune in policing and incarceration costs to the penal system. And people have spent longer in prison for holding/dealing pot than they do for abusing their family members. I think that needs to be changed. Pot also is less destructive to the body than alcohol and treated tobacco are, yet they are legal and the govt dispenses them as well.

Did you hear the rumours from the UN yesterday about a high official about to announce that all drugs should be legal, particularly since the war over it has killed hundreds of thousands of Mexicans during the last decades? I just read a small note about a leak, but no headlines have surfaced today...

No I hadn't. Marijuana is a way different kettle of fish than cocaine is though. That does a lot of damage to the human body and there's also the cartels, gangs and mobs that feed off the drugs .

That is the core issue...
If it became de-criminalised, there would be no more need for drug mafias, as governments could grow and sell it legaly, while all the money that the UN and others throw away on a hopeless fight could be used more constructively elsewhere.
But its a very controversial case and maybe the proposition will never see the light of day now when the surprise element is gone.

I wish that were true, but the same people who sell/distribute drugs, also do porn, prostitution, guns, murder for hire... Pot is one thing, but all drugs legalized won't change anything. IMO

Well, one Norwegian politician has a valid point when he claims that the decades-long fight against drug-related crime has failed miserably, so he urges his co-members of our parliament to try the opposite for a while and gather valuable info for comparison. Do we really have more to lose than gain?

I'm not sure. I think it's above my pay grade. I know that the current system isn't working but I'm pretty sure legalizing them would be a bad idea

Give the guy some time to prove that he is worthy of the voters' trust in him.
