Luxury Italian brand Dolce & Gabbana has released a perfume for dogs named after the co-founder's own pet. Fefe is alcohol free; and the firm says it has been safety-tested and approved by vets. The €99 (£85) fragrance is described as 'an olfactory masterpiece' featuring ylang ylang, musk and 'creamy undertones' of sandalwood. The bottle features a 24-carat gold-plated paw print and is said to be inspired by 'the unwavering love for Domenico Dolce's loyal companion, Fefe'. The company's marketing says it offers 'a touch of opulence, making every walk a fragrant and fashionable affair'. Domenico Dolce co-founded D&G with Stefano Gabbana in 1985, turning it into one of the world's most famous luxury brands. Other companies, such as pet grooming firms, also sell dog perfume at a much cheaper price, but it's believed to be the first time a big fashion house has released one. [found on Sky News]

I would think applying perfume would mess up a dog's natural sense of smell.

Such owners probably think that their lap dogs don't have any need for their hunting instincts anyway.

It's not just about hunting, though...dogs use their sense of smell the way we do our sense of sight, to navigate their surroundings. If you add another scent to their body it could interfere with their ability to acclimate to their surroundings.

When we had Sammy our last dog she knew all the spots she marked. But the Malamute before her would gladly roll in dog poop if given the chance. Every dog has their scent they like, doubt any come from a bottle and are expensive. Our dog now finds something in the yard and tries to rub her face on it. Not sure what it is but I pull her away from it.

"A phenomenon called 'sniffing lateralization' allows dogs to sniff with each nostril separately. Dogs sniff primarily with the right nostril when they first start sniffing. For familiar or non-aversive scents such as food, they tend to switch to the left nostril. For aversive, threatening or arousing scents, they stick with the right nostril. This has to do with the processing pathways in the brain: The right hemisphere processes novel information, while the left hemisphere controls behavioral responses to familiar stimuli."- Dr. Elizabeth Racine on www.carecredit.com/

I like the police dogs at airports Beagles are usually trained to sniff for food products. Coming back from France years ago was the first time I saw them and wondered what they were trained for. Later on the show to catch a smuggler I finally found out. But love the drug sniffing dogs too.
