The fire brigade in Kragerø was called when a walrus settled in a leisure boat on Saturday afternoon. They got him out of the boat, but the walrus swam back.
The pleasure boat, a rib, was moored to a floating pier at Stabbestad just outside Kragerø. The boat is low in the water.
– The boat is hanging at the berth, but the walrus is sleeping, so we're a bit confused as to what to do, duty officer Harald Kleppo at Sør-Øst 110 told (newspaper) VG on Saturday afternoon.
There were people like that in the place notified about what had happened. It is not known if the animal was injured.
– It's a bit big, Kleppo said before they figured out what to do.
Later on Saturday, duty officer Tom Berger informed NRK (radio/TV) that the fire department had retrieved the walrus from the boat, but it swam back into the boat.
– Well, now he can lie there until he wants to get out himself, says the foreman.
The Coast Guard cordoned off the area to prevent anyone from going out with the walrus.
– We were outside asking people to back off. And then we put up barricades around the area, Coast Guard ship commander Sigbjørn Vågene tells NRK.
A month ago, VG wrote about a sunbathing walrus on the pier in Langesund.
Berger believes it may be the same walrus that has been in the district for some time. He recalls that it was previously announced that peace should be allowed.
The walrus is considered an endangered species on the Red List. According to American studies, it can sleep up to 20 hours a day.
Males can weigh well over 1.2 tons, while females can weigh in excess of 850 kilos.
