Answer: Feeding and defence. The first herbivorous dinosaur to be officially named, Iguanodon lived in what is now England, Spain, Germany and Belgium during the Early Cretaceous, between 126 and 122 million years ago. One of its most distinctive features was its thumb spike which was originally thought to be a horn. This modified thumb is typically interpreted as a defensive weapon, but may also have been used to break into seeds and fruits.
