Just a friendly reminder about this week's quiz question. You've been asked: During which stage of the Early Cretaceous did the first Ceratopsians appear? Name: WulatelongPronunciation: Woo-la-tuh-longMeaning of name: "Wulate dragon", after the area of Inner Mongolia, northern China, where its fossils were discovered.Species: W. gobiensisSize: Uncertain due to a lack of fossils, but is estimated to have measured around 1.6 metres long.Family: OviraptoridaeDiet: Uncertain. Possible omnivore.First fossils found: Known only from a single, almost complete skull and skeleton discovered in the Bayan Mandahu Formation in the Wulatehouqi area of Inner Mongolia, northern China, in 2009. Named by Xu Xing, Tan Qing-Wei, Wang Shuo, Corwin Sullivan, David W. E. Hone, Han Feng-Lu, Ma Qing-Yu, Tan Lin and Xiao Dong in 2013.Lived: 83.6 to 72.1 million years ago during the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous in what is now Inner Mongolia, northern China.

Time to reveal the answer to this week's quiz question. You were asked: During which stage of the Early Cretaceous did the first Ceratopsians appear? Albian, Aptian, Barremian, Berriasian, Hauterivian or Valanginian?
Answer: Berriasian. The origin of Ceratopsians can be traced all the way back to the Berriasian stage of the Early Cretaceous, around 140 million years ago, however, palaeontologists now believe ancestral forms may have lived many millions of years earlier during the Middle and Late Jurassic. Unlike those living during the later stages of the Cretaceous, the most primitive Ceratopsians were small bipeds that lacked the characteristic horns and neck shields.
