Even oldtimers like me have to admit that it's difficult to imagine a life without an online connection. I read newspapers and visit this forum, check my e-mails and enjoy Youtube videos. But come to think about it, what is most important of all, is the search function provided by Google and other engines. With a couple of clicks, we now have access to everything, from tomorrow's weather to phone directories all over the world within a few seconds. Our ancestors didn't have this possibility and neither did we when we were young. Instead, we had to search in books to get the problem solved. So, to answer my own question: Yes, we can live without the Internet and perhaps we can even enjoy our life in a better way without it. But now when we have become so used to it, it will require a lot of hard adjustments that few of us are prepared for.

I guess the emergency rooms and mental clinics would be overloaded if many people were thrown offline at the same time.

Individuals can survive without the Internet, but public institutions would struggle if it disappeared for more than a few hours.

The Internet has become a commodity that we take for granted, along with electricity, TV stations and airplanes. We can live without it, but life will be a lot more difficult.

Experts call a voluntary life without the Internet "the new minimalism".

If that's what we can expect, I'd say we enjoy a comfortable life while we can.

The Internet provides us ghosts with a unique opportunity to manifest ourselves among the living. Here is a real-life story told by British paranormal investigator Tom Slemen, who also hosts his own radio show on the paranormal.
In December 1998, a 13-year-old girl named Mandy Belvedere suffered a fatal asthma attack and died in her bedroom in Austin, Texas. Mandy's asthma had been getting steadily worse since 1996, and doctors thought the girl was allergic to modern life. It was hypothesized that the artificial chemical additives which lace so many of our foods nowadays were having a detrimental effect on the teenager's health, but no matter what diet was tried, the girl would end up fighting for her breath and had to have an oxygen tank in her room. Another reaction was scaley eczema-like patches which would appear on the girl's face and arms. Mandy's condition curtailed her teenaged social life. She couldn't enjoy going to her friend's and she didn't even go to school; she had a daily home tutor who popped in for a few hours each day. Without a doubt, her PC provided her with hours of fun and interaction with other teenagers, as Mandy often talked to her peers via Excite chat rooms. She usually went under the name "Belvedere_13" - her surname and age. Mandy had several friends who talked to her in Teen Chat, and she came across as a very witty and funny girl.
However, after Mandy's untimely death, something bizarre happened. The name "Belvedere_13" continued to appear on the screens of people exchanging messages on Excite's Teen Chat. When Mandy's mother was alerted, she assumed some sick hoaxer was at work, but events took a spinechilling turn when Mrs Belvedere logged onto Teen Chat and challenged the person "masquerading" as her deceased daugher. She asked Mandy to prove she was her daughter by answering three very personal questions (which I cannot reproduce here). Belvedere_13 answered all three queries in such detail, Mrs Belvedere almost fainted. More and more questions were put to Belvedere_13 by the other members of Mandy's family and all the questions were answered in amazing depth.
"Oh my God is that you Mandy? Is it really my girl?" Mrs Belvedere sobbed.
The typed answer came back...."Yes Mom."
When Mrs Belvedere asked the girl how it was possible to be in a chat room on the Net if she was dead, Belvedere_13 failed to reply. Further questions were also met with a lack of response.
The Excite company was asked to try and trace the whereabouts of Belvedere_13, and they said that was impossible. However, a software engineer who heard about the strange case got permission from Excite to try out new Governmental software which could trace computer users to a general area. The engineer established that Belvedere_13 was logging onto Teen Chat from the neighborhood of Austin, Texas where Mandy had lived, but he could tell no more about the sinister chatter.
Reports are still coming in that Belvedere_13 is still chatting to people at Excite Chat even today. If you use the chat rooms, keep an eye out for Belvedere_13...

Can we survive without the Internet? When faced with this question, I first wanted to answer 'no' and rephrase it to 'How long can we possibly survive without the Internet?' But the more I thought about it, the more I started to find arguments to the contrary. Actually, regardless of what we may feel now, the Internet is in no way essential to human survival. People may be addicted to it, but if the Internet were gone, after repeatedly seeing nothing new when checking their phones or computers, the addiction would eventually wane. I think that people would finally adjust and get on with their lives. Yes, the Internet is integrated into many systems; and yes, it goes beyond just people communicating and finding entertainment, so some basic utilities and supply chains may be interrupted, but being creative and optimistic, humanity will find ways to deal with it, then come up with someting else that will make our lives easier and more comfortable. Last year, Charles Anderson invented the Alternet and that's just the beginning... www.wikitribune.com/article/31009/

Having established that most of us will probably be able to survive withouit the Internet, we will nonetheless struggle quite a bit and not only at a personal level. Innovations that took over 100 years to achieve during 1800–1900 takes less than 2 years today due to the vast resource of knowledge on a single platform. And the pattern will most likely be the same in the future. So in light of that, humanity will suffer a great setback without the World Wide Web.
