www.washingtonpost.com/news/education/wp/2018/02/21/trumps-solution-for-school-shootings-arm-teachers/?utm_term=.dbc92a728b63Trump’s solution for school shootings: arm teachers "Seated between teenage survivors of the Florida school shooting, President Trump said during a White House listening session Wednesday that arming teachers and posting gun-toting veterans in schools could deter or stop school shooters. His comments came during an emotional meeting that included Vice President Pence, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and school-shooting survivors and families who had lost children to gun violence, including a father who buried his daughter just last week. They poured out grief and anger over the lack of efforts to stem school shootings. Trump talked about strengthening background checks and increasing mental health resources. But his most pointed and specific remarks came when he spoke about adding security to schools by arming teachers and posting gun-equipped veterans. Trump posited that if Aaron Feis, a popular football coach, has been armed, he could have stopped the gunman who killed Feis and 16 others last week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.".

Not a new idea or a surprise. It's not ideal and personally I'm not in favor of it. I've known some crazy teachers in my time. But a LOT of people including parents ARE in favor of it. Shooters are cowards, if they know people are armed and will shoot back they will think twice. I'm in favor of protecting our schools the same way we protect banks, airports and other places of importance.
Of course all of this is mute if the assault weapons aren't taken care of. If a person wants to shoot people he/she can simply wait in the parking lot or across the street until school is out.

I think it is a terrible idea to arm teachers.
I see all sorts of obvious problems with that, including many many teachers will refuse tocarry a gun, which should be their right.
I also agree that going after assault weapons should be at the top of the list.
Nobody needs an assault weapon for sport.
Nobody needs an assault weapon for self defense.

It's not a terrible idea, he's not talking about arming just any teacher, especially ones that can not handle stress. He is talking about arming teachers that are ex-Military or ex-Police and KNOW how to handle a high stress shooting scenario. I would rather have them as guards in the school and halls 3 or 4 to a school.

I'm not thrilled with the idea but if you limit it to teachers who are ex-military or ex-law enforcement and have training that's one way of mitigating potentially disastrous results. There needs to be some sort of security...our kids have a right to feel safe going to school.
I do agree that banning assault weapons should be done first though. No-one outside of the military or law enforcement has the need for an assault weapon, period.

Count me in on banning assault weapons except for police and Military. But I'll also bet that never happens in our life time. The NRA paves/pays the way for to many politicians on both sides. So I say it will never happen.
I like @justbec, idea of working entry to a school just like boarding a plane. Scan all backpacks and walk through metal detectors.
What I don't like about teachers with guns are all the kids running for safety and two people firing at each other and getting kids caught in the crossfire. Ever hear about military personnel getting killed by friendly fire? Wait to see how fast lawsuits get filed in those cases. Security shouldn't be the teachers job. Then we have all seen the teachers that are have nuts, maybe they were in the military at one time, want them guarding the kids? I sure don't.
But say they do arm some teachers and they have to murder a kid. Now they are killers. When police kill someone they usually go on a paid leave or change jobs while it gets sorted out. They have to live with that the rest of their lives. Sure they might have saved lives but they might end up ruining their own lives. I had a close friend that was a cop. Had to shoot a guy because he kept coming at him with a knife. It bothered him so much he quit the police force. Years ago police rarely ever used their guns their entire career. That doesn't seem the case anymore. So hire security for the schools and keep ALL the guns out.
