LinkMultiple injuries and fatalities in 'massive' Amtrak derailment onto the I-5 freeway south of Seattle First responders are treating the incident as a mass casualty, according to KIRO 7. There are multiple injuries and fatalities, a Pierce County spokesman told NBC. All lanes of the southbound freeway are closed, the Washington State Department of Transportation said.

I think I saw that so far just 3 died but looking at the wreck there might be more and several had to get hurt pretty bad. Part of the train in dangling over Interstate 5 I believe. There is a truck and car below the tracks that look heavily damaged.
Sad time as people are heading to families for Christmas.

It looks really bad and I can't imagine what it was like being in one of those train cars.

So far, the speculations go in the direction of a faulty infrastructure or a possible obstacle on the track.
I passed under that bridge as a passenger of a northbound minivan in 1982 on the way to Seattle airport. A train crossed over us and I could see the entire bridge shaking. I remember hoping good maintenance would prevent accidents.
Now, 35 years later, my fear then has become a tragic reality.

I heard one report that said there was something on the track. Also heard this morning that the train was going 80mph in a 30mph area.. And yes the residents in the town had complained months earlier that the tracks and infrastructure in that area were not up up to a high speed train.

50 mph slower and all may have been OK. Here in this local area with 7 bridges they are checking them several times a year but it could also be checking and then coming back and fixing also. Soon one of the bridges will be replaced with a new wider bridge. These are just the bridges going over the river. They check all the other and fix or replace them also. It's a huge task in this hilly area but one that has to be completed and then watched.
Sadly that bridge sounded so bad it's hard to believe it wasn't fixed years ago.

It's scary how many things were ignored and how fast they were going just to make up time..

The seed limits are their for a reason no matter how fast a train can go. So it looks like it was the engineers fault.

So it looks like it was the engineers fault. It often is. But not necessarily. It can also be due to insufficient infrastructure or lack of maintenance. Even wrong speed limit signs and wrong commands from traffic managers. In perspective: "Sharing rails with freight has a negative effect on passenger speeds for another reason: The rail systems are designed for slower freight trains. Except for the high-speed Acela in the Northeast (and a lone stretch in Michigan), Amtrak is limited to a top speed of 79 mph because to go above that would require all kinds of upgrades to signals, gates, crossings, and ties, among other things." I have quoted this statement from www.slate.com/articles/life/transport/2009/05/stop_this_train.html, an article that also explains why trains run slower now than they did 90 years ago.

I agree it could be a combination of things but speed seems to be at the top from what I have heard inspectors have said but they have a long way to go before the investigation is over.

Latest speculations in Norwegian online news:
2 miles before the bridge, there is a sign warning train operators to reduce their speed. It may have been ignored by the engineer and conductor, who allegedly was just a trainee in need of practice, so that may have distracted them from paying attention to the sign.
The investigation may take another 10 days to complete, it said.
