The free press is our Fourth Estate.
They are essential to our democracy.
Those who have tried to deflect from their own bad actions by constantly shouting "fake news" have no respect for the part a free press plays in our democracy.
Their lack of integrity is the worst I have ever seen in my lifetime.
Fortunately, the checks and balances our founding fathers put in our Constitution still seems to be holding them at bay...though barely.
History so far has shown that charlatans such as these will eventually go down.
I have faith that the past is prologue to the future once again for our democracy.

There are already too many countries with media censorship, so a free press is important. But it must be used wisely and with caution. Here in Norway, we have had an ethical council for decades that can give fines for breach of good press ethics. Last year, the government appointed another organ called the Fake News Board, which evaluates doubtful statements in the media and exposse them as fabrications if they cannot be properly documented. That way, we know what to believe or not. Some other countries have similar systems. This has led the newspepers, TV and radio stations to become much more thorough in the noble arts of self control and source verification before they print or broadcast a case. With so many places to get access to news, including social media, it's good for young people to have ways to document the truth in what they watch and read.

Freedom of speech, I believe in that. Meaning the First Amendment. I would hope we all agree joey with that. Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. |
