Was it a side branch of the horses' family tree? Equidae is the family to which horses, asses and zebra belong. It also contains many other species that are known only from fossils. The family evolved around 50 million years ago, during the Ypresian stage of the Early Eocene. Around 16 million years ago, during the Burdigalian stage of the Early Miocene, the subfamily Equinae evolved.
