Dinosaurs, pterosaurs & marine reptiles of Isla Sorna

Exciting news! Australia has a new species of pterosaur. It's been named Thapunngaka which means "Spear mouth" and is estimated to have had a wingspan of seven metres, making it Australia's largest pterosaur.

Name: Ankylosaurus
Pronunciation: An-ky-lo-sore-us
Meaning of name: "Fused lizard"
Species: A. magniventris
Size: Estimated to have measured between 6 and 8 metres long, 1.7 metres tall and weighing between 5 and 8 metric tonnes. Thought to have been the largest Ankylosaurid.
Family: Ankylosauridae
Diet: Herbivore. Fed on low-growing vegetation.
First fossils found: Known from numerous specimens discovered in the Hell Creek, Ferris, Lance, Frenchman and Scollard Formations of Canada and the United States. A prominent feature of Ankylosaurus was its armour, which consisted of bony knobs and plates embedded in the skin. On the end of the tail was a large club, believed to have been used as an active defensive weapon.
Lived: 68 to 66 million years ago during the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous in what is now western Canada and the western United States.
