It’s long been agreed that a huge asteroid smashed into what is now Mexico's Yucatan Penisula at the end of the Cretaceous, wiping out all the non-avian dinosaurs. However, scientists have now revealed that a smaller asteroid believed to have crashed into the ocean near West Africa during the same era, creating another ‘catastrophic’ event.

Yes, I read that article, too. It turns out that they don't know which of the two was first and how much of life on Earth was wiped out by each of them.

New quiz question: True or False? Three non-avian dinosaur genus had already been officially named before the word 'Dinosaur' was first used. I'll say true And Talira Greycrest, just FYI...for some reason all your posts are coming up in white print now, which makes them nearly impossible to read in some of the themes, at least in Denim Indigo which I'm using. Just thought I'd let you know in case you didn't realize it.

Mybe we should bring in PEEKABOO to solve this issue?

Species: B. primitivus Size: Full adult size uncertain as the only known fossils are thought to belong to subadults. Family: Uncertain. Likely Stegosaurid. Diet: Herbivore First fossils found: Known only from three partial skulls and partial skeletons, the first of which was discovered in the Shaximiao Formation of southwestern China, in 2016. Named by Dai Hui, Li Ning, Susannah C. R. Maidment, Wei Guangbiao, Zhou Yuxuan, Hu Xufeng, Ma Qingyu, Wang Xunqian, Hu Haiqian and Peng Guangzhao in 2022. Lived: 167.5 to 164.5 million years ago during the Bathonian and Callovian stages of the Middle Jurassic in what is now southwestern China.

Tix Mascot , LadyPorthos , well done for correctly guessing the answer to this week's quiz question. You were asked: True or False? Three non-avian dinosaur genera had already been officially named before the word 'Dinosaur' was first used.Answer: True. The word 'dinosaur', meaning "Terrible lizard", was invented by English palaeontologist, Sir Richard Owen, in 1842. By this time, three non-avian dinosaur genera had already been discovered in southern England and officially named: Megalosaurus in 1824, Iguanodon in 1825 and Hylaeosaurus in 1833. In 1858, the first American dinosaur, Hadrosaurus, was named.Today's dino:Name: YunmenglongPronunciation: Yun-meng-longMeaning of name: "Yunmeng dragon"Species: Y. ruyangensisSize: Estimated to have measured around 27 metres long and weighing 30 metric tonnes.Family: Uncertain. Likely Euhelopodid.Diet: HerbivoreFirst fossils found: Known only from a single, partial skeleton discovered in the Haoling Formation of Henan Province, central China. Named by Chinese palaeontologists, J. Lu, L. Xu, H. Pu, X. Zhang, Y. Zhang, S. Jia, H. Chang, J. Zhang and X. Wei in 2013.Lived: 125 to 100.5 million years ago from the Barremian stage through to the Albian stage of the Early Cretaceous in what is now central China.
